This one is called "What Might Have Been." It is a story that takes up
shortly after Carl disappeared, er "died." Rachel gets a mysterious letter
to visit Loretta, but Loretta wasn't the sender. It isn't finished, but
rather a work in progress.

Dear Rachel. It has been so long since I have last seen you. I have missed
you terribly
and would love for you to come to New York for a visit. Please bring the
twins with you and come soon. Could it be…. (SHADOWY FIGURE LOOMS OUTSIDE

BRIDGE TO OPENING CREDITS:
ACT ONE C.
CORY LIVING ROOM/ EVENING. RACHEL, LETTER IN HAND, WALKS TOWARDS DOORS AND
FIGURE DISAPPEARS BEFORE SHE SPOTS HIM/HER.
RACHEL
(TO HERSELF, LOOKING AT SKY) Could it be….no, no it isn’t from him.
(DOOR SHUTS AND AMANDA ENTERS)
AMANDA
Hi Mom. Are you okay?
(RACHEL COMES BACK INSIDE AND SHUTS DOORS)
RACHEL
Yes, I’m fine. I was just reading a letter. Where have you been off to?
AMANDA
Just some business meetings, nothing major. Who’s the letter from?
RACHEL
(STILL HOLDING THE LETTER) Oh, it’s from Loretta, (MUMBLES) I think. (MAKE
CLEAR THIS IS AN ASSUMPTION BY RACHEL) She wants me to bring the twins for a
visit.
AMANDA
Are you going to go?
RACHEL
I’m not sure.
AMANDA
I think you should go. I mean you haven’t seen Loretta in so long. Matt
and I can manage.
RACHEL
I was thinking of a visit to New York. But I’m not so sure that I should
leave you.
AMANDA
Mother, I’m a big girl. I’ll be fine. (TAKE RACHEL WITH A DOUBTFUL LOOK.)
ACT TWO C.
LORETTA’S BEAUTY SHOPPE/ NIGHT. LORETTA CLEANING UP. RACHEL KNOCKS AT THE
DOOR.
LORETTA
Who could that be at this hour? (UNLOCKS AND OPENS DOOR, EXCITED TO SEE
RACHEL.) Rachel! Is it really you? Oh, I can’t believe my eyes!
RACHEL
(LAUGHING.) Loretta, it’s so good to see you.
TWO EMBRACE. THEN LORETTA SEES THE CHILDREN.
LORETTA
My heavens! The babies aren’t babies at all! They look so different than
their pictures. Elizabeth is you made over I believe. And Cory, ah, this
one is going to be just like his daddy, I can tell. (TAKE RACHEL SAD LOOK)
Oh, Rachel.
RACHEL
Yes, they are just like us. I just wish, (BREAKING A LITTLE, GASPS TO HOLD
TEARS) I just wish that Carl were here to see them grow.
LORETTA
(COMFORTING) Oh, honey, you know that he is looking down on them, and
protecting them in ways we can’t.
RACHEL
I try to remember that. I do. And I try to be grateful for what we had,
what he gave me – our love, the twins. But it is so hard to be without him.
Oh, Loretta, I miss him so much.
LORETTA HUGS RACHEL. FADE TO COMMERCIAL.
ACT THREE C.
RACHEL’S OLD ROOM AT LORETTA’S. RACHEL ENTERS FROM BEDROOM AND LORETTA
ENTERS FROM KITCHEN WITH TEA TRAY.
RACHEL:
Cory was out like a light. Elizabeth had to have a story though. She loves
this book that Carl (PAUSE), that Carl read to her. She won’t go to sleep
without it.
LORETTA:
And what about you? How are you sleeping? (HANDS RACHEL A CUP OF TEA AS BOTH
SIT AT TABLE NEAR THE WINDOW)
RACHEL:
Better. It took me a while before I could sleep in our bed again. I just
couldn’t go to sleep without Carl’s arms holding me. And then waking up
without him beside me, it was too much, too hard. So I walked the house at
night. I’d watch the babies, the grubs he called them, I’d look at them
sleeping. If I slept at all it was in the nursery. I’d fall asleep
watching our babies.
LORETTA:
Well, they are a part of Carl. Seems natural that you want them near you.
RACHEL:
Yes, I don’t know what I would have done if I didn’t have them. Just
knowing that a part of Carl is with me in them is so much. And now being
here feels right too. I’m glad that I came. Even though they are too
little to understand how wonderful this place is, I think it is right the
babies are here. I’m so glad you asked me to come.
LORETTA:
What? I didn’t ask you to come. I mean don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled
that you’re here.
RACHEL:
No, wait a minute, I got your letter asking me to bring the twins.
LORETTA:
Rachel, honey, I’m delighted that you’re here, but I never sent any letter.
RACHEL:
Well, if you didn’t, then who did?
FADE.
ACT FOUR C.
RACHEL’S ROOM. LORETTA HOLDING THE LETTER.
RACHEL:
Are you sure that you didn’t send this letter?
LORETTA:
Positive.
RACHEL:
Then who did?
LORETTA:
Well, I’m glad that whoever sent it did because it got you here. I’ve
missed you.
RACHEL:
Oh, I’ve missed you too.
LORETTA:
Is this letter something we should worry about? You’re kids maybe not
wanting you around Bay City?
RACHEL:
No, I don’t think it was done to get me away so someone can get to them.
Things have settled down lately. I don’t think there’s any danger. I’d
just like to know who sent it though.
LORETTA:
Not to break this air of mystery or anything, but I think we both should
get some rest. We have a big day tomorrow, you showing me around and all.
Funny how you know more hideouts in this city then I do, and I live here.
RACHEL:
It’s because of Carl’s tours. He knew how to discover hidden treasures.
LORETTA:
Yes, he found you, didn’t he? Do you think you’ll be able to get some sleep?
RACHEL:
Yes I think so. Good-night, Loretta.
LORETTA:
Good-night, honey.
FADE.

RACHEL BREATHES DEEPER, HER EYES FLICKER AND SLOWLY OPEN. SHE’S HALF AWAKE
AND NOT AS SHOCKED AS SHE SHOULD BE.
RACHEL:
Carl? How did you get in? I locked the door. Oh, but this is a dream and
you can do anything in a dream.
CARL:
Love, you’re not asleep. I’m really here.
RACHEL:
No, you can’t be. You died in that fire. I scattered your ashes. You
can’t be here.
CARL:
I’m so sorry that you had to go through that. I’ll explain everything to
you. But first you have to realize that I’m here. Come, love, let me hold
you. (CRYING AS HE EMBRACES HER. RACHEL FEELS HIS TEARDROP AND STARTS TO
CRY) Oh, girl you feel so good in my arms. I’ve missed you so.
RACHEL:
No, they said you were dead. They said you were dead. I saw the ashes. I,
I….but I knew. Some part of me knew you couldn’t be.
CARL:
Love, it’s okay. Don’t talk now. There will be plenty of time for talk.
Just let me hold you. Oh I do love you, Rachel.
RACHEL:
And I love you.
THEY KISS. FADE TO BLACK
