Amsterdam Trip

Another overseas club trip saw 27 runners and supporters from Meltham AC and Holmfirth Harriers set off on the Friday 13th ferry from Hull. Amsterdam was the destination, with its half and full marathons waiting for us.

Ready for the race Andy Beardsley and Mick Pennington Before all the hard work of the races we had a relaxing crossing on the overnight ferry. After a night getting acclimatised to the local Amstel beer, the biggest danger was getting lost in the corridors of the cabin area going to the loo.( rumour has it Jeff Taylor claimed 3.51 (4) miles to his weekly training total.)

Richard Beaumont We arrived in Amsterdam just before lunch, to find our hotel, approprietly named the COK CITY right in the middle of the red light and shopping district. so after unpacking, it was off to do some "window shopping". Lets just say it's nothing like Kingsgate. Some sightseeing and then an evening meal in a great little Italian restaurant set everyone up for the next day.

Both races started outside, and finished in style inside the old Olympic stadium. Holmfirths Geoff Pierson

You do forget the pain over those last 300 meters when your running in an historic place like that. 12 runners completed the marathon and 3 ran the Half. The course ran through the city center where the support was at its best. The marathon being 2 laps gave you this lift twice, the second time round it was very welcome.

The aching muscles after the marathon were soon forgotten on the sunday evening as we hit the town.

Then it was off to the Grasshopper bar to sample the local beers and delicacies.
