Fort Lauderdale
GLCC
Fort Lauderdale is located on the Atlantic coast in South Florida, about 25 miles north of Miami. It is called the Venice of America because it is a city of islands connected by a complex web of canals and waterways. Its legendary beaches.......It has an average yearly temperature of 77° and very dry and mild winters where the temperature rarely drops below the high 60's. However, the summers can be brutal with high humidity, soaring temperatures, and violent afternoon thunderstorms. These seasonal extremes of weather have created a transient population in Fort Lauderdale dominated by the "snow birds" who put their storm shutters up between Memorial Day and Thanksgiving and disappear back to their northern homelands. But during the balmy winter months Fort Lauderdale attracts not only seasonal residents but hoards of tourists from all over the world. The beach is lined with hotels, restaurants, bars, and a wide variety of touristy shops that are all buzzing with activity. This is especially true during Spring Break. Despite the City's effort to curb the festivities, the intensity of Spring Break has only decreased slightly from its peak in the 1980's. Hordes of scantily clad college students still descend on the city for two weeks in spring to drink excessively and "go wild."
