Gibbons, at thirty-two, gave Dempsey one of his hardest fights. They went fifteen rounds--like featherweights--and Grantland Rice wrote, "I've never witnessed as much speed in a heavyweight bout." Dempsey won narrowly and handed the lie to the belief that he was purely and simply a slugger. "Don't let anyone tell you Dempsey can't box," the battered Gibbons said. "He knows all the tricks."

   When the day of the fight came, they didn't seem to know whether the fight would be held or not, Dempsey had been guaranteed a certain amount of money to fight and they weren't able raise that amount. Some of the trains that had been chartered in the east were cancelled and everything was pretty well mixed up, but they decided to hold the fight anyway.
