I live on a small island called Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.
In about 1839 a Niels Bidstrup left Bornholm for Australia. According to the information I have, he should have met a Ester Hounsom from England on that journey. They later married and founded the family name Bidstrup in Australia.
I have found the ship that brought Esther Hounsom and her family to Port Adelaide in South Australia. It was the Buckinghamshire which left from London 1838-12-11 via Plymouth and arrived at Port Adelaide 1839-03-21. I didn't find Niels Bidstrup on the passenger list nor on the crew list. He was a carpenter and therefore it is possible that he became a crew member on a ship bound for Australia.
Therefore I doubt that he did meet Esther on the ship, more likely he met her in Adelaide. I wonder if you know where I might be able to find confirmation on his immigration to Australia. If I can find that I will know the date of his arrival to Australia.

On 2 Feb 2009, Jens sent a link to National Archives because he found the Naturalisation Certificate of Niels Bidstrup, dated 8 Aug 1849, where he says he has been in South Australia 4 years, and is aged 39, from Bornholm, Denmark. It was signed by Governor of South Australia - Sir Henry Edward Fox Young on 1 Aug 1839. The name Bidstrup gives 63 records, ending with 'Photographs of Reserve Phosphate Stocks - West and South Australia - August 1939 - Wallaroo Mount Lyell Works, Wallaroo - Mr Steel and Mr Bidstrup in front of heap - 25 August'

The Buckinghamshire departed London 11 Dec 1838, with Captain William Moore. This was probably the largest sailing ship to enter Port Adelaide in the days of sailing ships. She arrived in Port Adelaide on March 22 1839 with 512 passengers on board. Of these, 443 were migrants being sent out by the Commissioners under the care of General Superintendent Nathanel Hailes for the colonisation of South Australia. There were around 42 cabin passengers, 15 in steerage and 443 bounty emigrants, including 180 children. The Crew List has 94 names. Di Cummins web page includes a image of a painting of the vessel, and notes from a Diary kept by John Channing, one of the Steerage passengers, who appears to have disapproved of the sailors giving the single women extra attention.

From a Rootsweb entry, email address bounced 14 Feb 2009, Mary Ann Reeves was the daughter of John Reeves and Ann (nee Tee). Mary Ann born Blendworth Hampshire 1796, wed 1812 to George Hounsom(e) at Portsea Hampshire. The couple migrated to Australia in 1838. Mary Ann died in South Australia 1872.
