WDP Angel LCD Test Preview

Our test gun arrived and is being tested NOW!

The first thing that you notice right away when you pick up the new gun/tank combination is how lightweight it is.  The new "Angel Air" Regulator is responsible for most of this.  I would estimate that the gun/tank combo is easily two pounds lighter than my present Angel LE with Air America Apocalypse tank and versa cradle.   The tank alone will retail for about $600, and a plain LCD gun will retail for $1,250 (US).  Limited edition versions will also be available with color anodizing and milling for $1650 (US).  Colors are Silver, red, blue, black, and green.  Our test gun is one of only 12 green ones made.

Retrofitting Older Angels
I asked WDP if they had any plans to retrofit older angels with the new grip frame to upgrade them to the new "LCD" status.  The answer is no, because the LCD Angel is more than just a new circuit board and grip frame.  It is an entirely new body as well.  New air passages, a lower operating pressure (300psi), longer bolt, larger breech, and more are all benefits of the new body design.

Infra Red Removed
There is a large LCD screen on the left hand of the gun. Jon Rice from WDP said that they tested an Infra Red pickup on the right side for quick (gun to gun) programming, but player feedback suggested that people were afraid of having guns programmed remotely from someone off of the field, so they ditched it. Perhaps it will resurface later.

No More POTS Adjusters on the circuit board
Dwell is AUTOMATICALLY adjusted for optimal performance and Rate of Fire limits can be pre-programmed.   Automating the dwell setting should reduce ball breakage and reduce air consumption.  New Angel owners are usually unaware of how important the dwell setting is, but trust me, it affects performance.   Air exhaust holes have been relocated from the top of the gun to the sides of the site rails.

Less Ball Pinch, we hope....
The bolt is now longer and the breach is larger so the bolt should not "pinch" paintball shells in the end of the barrel.  This has been a problem that has plagued Angels for some time when shooting low quality paint or when shooting at high rates of fire.  When an Angel pinches a ball in a game, the player must take a stick squeegee, push it down the barrel, and smack the bolt back to free it.   Since there is usually a ball (or part of a ball) jamming the bolt, this remedy comes at the cost of filling your bolt holes with paint.  You can get through the rest of the game at that point, but your long ball accuracy is out the window.  WDP confirmed this in a phone call with me, and said "ball pinch should be dramatically reduced".  For me, this improvement will make the upgrade worth it.
