So, it is proposed here that we consider also as a source the scientific knowledge that we have of nature and the evolution of its beings. Evolution is a process that produces, over time, an increase in generalized intelligence. As simple brains evolve into complexity, evolution seems to require and result in more and more generalized awareness or intelligence. Therefore, we can assume an "Evolutionary Imperative" that could be interpreted as a "Social Contract" or "Moral Imperative": We shall do our best to develope sapience in one another. We can simplify matters if we call the summation of the truest awareness at the human level: Sapience = Love, wisdom, morality and creativity. Our inspirations, the inspirations of others, our reason, our scientific knowledge of nature, can be in part or alltogether incorrect; we know that by experience. Since we humans have negative as well as positive feelings, plus imagination not all that seems to be awareness is true awareness. In order to advance to true sapience we must avoid the complacency of certainty, and should always be ready to doubt, carefully checking the results of our proposals and/or actions,to see if in--truth-- they have increased sapience in ourselves and/or in others. Our very complexity makes this task difficult, and it is specially difficult to know the long term effects of our actions. One way to diminish this difficulty is to use the criteria of objective creativity (creativity that can be observed). For example, transforming some material thing into something new (inventions and the arts) or acting to transform something neutral or negative into something positive, (as when we help children to develope or rectifying an injustice). When our actions produce such good, observable results, we are indeed becoming Sapient! The desire to be wise, moral and creative, is a direct manifestation of natural love: love for the whole of creation, love of creating, love of humanity and love of self. Therefore we can speak of love as the necessary element in our nature to motivate us to: " Do our best to develope each other's Sapience". |
