Maggie's OOPS!

OOPS_in_water_front_view.JPG (87738 bytes)This is a bit of a run-down on the boat.

Life's a Reach - and then you jibe!

As you can see from the pictures - it is not a production boat!  It is a custom made sloop - made of wood, with a skin of fiberglass.

The boat was registered in 1994 - so it's fairly new.  It was built in Rockport, Texas.

The design is a New Zealand design, by Hartley, called "Stardrift".  I still have the original plans. The builders did modify the plans a bit.

It has twin bilge keels, along with a full center keel.  It draws 30 inches - PERFECT for island hopping.

It is registered as 30 feet.  There is a 5 foot bowsprit. The beam is 10 feet.

The cabin has 6 foot ceilings,  with lots of interior living space - more than a normal 30 foot boat. We have had a sit-down dinner inside with 8 people all sitting at the table.

This is the V-berth. Of course, it doesn't look this good NOW!  This was before I moved me and all my necessary stuff aboard! It is now filled with my computer!

r0300561.jpg (68541 bytes)This is the cockpit, right after I finished painting it.  Now, of course, it's filled with sailing junk! It shows the brass wheel.  The post sticking up is for mounting the compass.

Since I acquired the boat - I have added all new 12 volt wiring.  I added 2 solar panels with 4 batteries.  We make enough electricity for all our needs.  Except, of course, when we run the fridge all the time!  That eats up a lot of power.

We have an inboard diesel engine - Faryman, 5.5 hp.  The engine has been totally rebuilt.

We have a helm wheel with cable steering installed.

I applied a new coat of paint in the summer of 1999.  I also put on 3 coats of ablative bottom paint.

I have a 35 gallon water tank, with 2 additional 10 gallon tanks.

There is a 2 burner propane stove in the galley, with a double sink.  We use a porta-potty in the head. The head is private, enclosed, and with a sink, running water and vanity. A shower could be rigged in there.

Currently, we carry a mainsail, a regular jib and a 130% jib.  All the lines for the sails are set up to be managed from the sizeable cockpit.

We currently carry an Avon inflatable dinghy- with 2 oars.  I do have a 4 hp motor for the dinghy, but it's extremely temperamental and a royal pain!

I have recently acquired a 8hp outboard motor for a back-up.

I'm sure there are many other questions that folks have - but these are answers to the most common ones!
