Being Different

Lesson: bring diversity to the classroom.

Grade Level: used for any grade

Objective:  Upon completion of this lesson students will be able to realize what it is like to be physically different from the others.

Overall View: Students will pick a disability out of the bag and have to be disabled for an hour.  Some students might be blind while others may not be able to hear.  Students will be able to gather a feeling for what it is like to have a disability.  The class will go on according to the lesson of the hour.  After the hour the students will be able to write what they were feeling, while being disabled.

Students Choice: Students will have two options on the paper that they drew out of the bag.  The student can then choose to have one of the disabilities or have one for a half hour and the other for the remaining time. 

Effecting Students Lives:  The students will be able to relate their experience with be different to everyday people that are seen on the street.  Be the end of the lesson students will have a grasp on what it is like to be different and have others around who are different in other ways.  Students will also be able to understand that diversity is not just looks; diversity can be described in numerous ways.
