clouds. clouds will gather late today
the ceiling will lower and glower into gray
and you'll turn and crouch beneath.

flash. crash the lightning will illuminate
and burn on pretty things, old photographs
the thunder will erupt then angrily.

when the rain begins
it will arrive in waves
each pouring hard enough to flatten
drown you as hail beats on your back.

and when you cannot take another breath
the wave will pass, spent
only to be followed by another
pouring down with greater wrath.

storm. storm, and at last the stars will show themselves
the drip, drip from leaves and eaves will summon you to dreams
and uneasy currents of swollen streams
will spin you fitfully through the night.

clouds. clouds will regather towards the dawn
after another numbing downpour you may venture out
on the new and slippery streets reflecting sunny promise
to do ordinary things before the evening storm.

they say you must like rain to live here
but those who stay are gardeners.
