Godsmack recorded their first album on next to nothing, fund-wise. Musically speaking, they had everything going for them. At first there were some set backs, such as rumors that Sully (the lead singer) was a witch, when in actualality he was just a practicing member of the Wiccan religion. Contrary to what you may have read, Godsmack did not get its name from the Alice In Chains song about heroine. The story behind the name is as follows:
One day Sully came to rehearse with a mark on his face (he didn't know where he got it) and the band members started taking notice. They asked if God had smacked him. They liked the way it sounded so they took it as the band name.
Another setback was Wal-Mart removing the first CD from the shelves because of the figure of a pentogram in the CD booklet.
