Metz August 24th, 2003

The family pet Hi,
The program for Sun 24 Aug, our first day, was 'With your host family', and in our case the family included this seven year old pet - a reluctant lady who was shy with strangers.
I was particularly impressed by the Guide I was given at the Church of Our Lady -
Dear Friend - this short guide is our way of thanking you for the pleasure you give us in visiting our church.

May God smile on you today,
Elizabeth

Leaving England Luxemburg below us
We flew into Luxemberg from Heathrow and were met by our Hosts - in our case Joseph - and brought the 60kms to Metz. These views from the plane show English clouds, and then the different Luxemberg landscape as we approached the airport.
Jardin Max and Joseph pose for me
Metz, which we are told the locals call 'Mez', has many lovely gardens and churches. Joseph began our explorations with a visit to nearby Jardin Botanique, where we even saw an aviary with some australian birds that became unacceptable pets - Mallee ringnecks, wax bills and cockateils and budgies all greeted us in one of a set of controlled atmosphere rooms. This area is badly drought stricken and lawns are brown, even the roses are struggling.
Our Host home With Marie
Home again to collect Marie and go to church, coincidently called St Joseph's, which is a hundred years old. We walked around the centre where the church is located, and were able to get some money from the 'hole in the wall'.
Train Train again
This floral achievement really took my eye. Is it an idea for James's next project - a floral tractor in the front garden, after he gets the new front room in order?
Cathedral window In the afternoon we visited the Cathedral, where the walls are very high, with four levels of windows, one above the other. Stained glass windows are a feature, and modern artists are challenged, as this image shows. My other photos of windows failed. Sorry
Our afternoon was capped by attending an organ recital at the Parish Church of Our Lady, a building new in 1665 and features the baroque style of architecture. It houses a splendid organ built in Trier in 1729. and we were able to hear a recital by Weiland Meinhold who was born 1961 and included 3 of his composures in the program featuring artists like Bohm 1661 - 1733, Telemann 1681 - 1767 and Vivaldi 1678 - 1741, who date around the time this particular organ was new.
Gargen described Garden
Gargen described The Town Hall is next to the Cathedral and features a garden laid out as a picture called 'Le Graouilly', which has been so admired that it is being copied in Canada next year at the 'Mosaiculture Internationales de Montreal' June 21 to Oct 30. The Garden represents a legend of Metz. The dragon is slain, so are the other monsters.
