The Teachings of Islam > Tawhid
Islam and Muslim are the words of the Quran. The Quran says:

Surely the way of life acceptable to Allah is Islam (Sura 4 Verse 19)

He named you Muslims before and in this. (22:78)

The same message has come down from all the prophets and messengers, beginning with Adam. It was completed at the time of Muhaamad (s.a.w), the last prophet. In the Quran it is written:

This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed my favour upon you anf have chosen for you Islam as your way of life. (5:3)
.
Tawhid (the Unity of God)

Tawhid implies that everything in the universe was created by Allah - the sustainer of the universe and the sole source of its guidance. Allah has no partner or son. He gives us life and He takes it away. We must return to Him after death. Tawhid is the core of Iman (the faith) and is expressed in the Sura al Ikhlas:

Say, He is Allah, the one, the eternal and the Absolute. None is born of Him. Nor is he born and there is none like Him. (112:1-4)

Tawhid shapes and regulates the course of each person's life. Allah has created all that is in the earth and the heavens to be used by mankind. In the Quran it is written:

Have you not seen how Allah has made all that is in the earth of service to you. (22:65)

See you not how Allah has made availabe for your use whatever is in the sky and on the earth and has given His bountiful gifts, both seen and unseen, to you. (31:20)

Muslims believe that Allah knows the present, the past and the future of every creature. Nothing can happen without the will and knowledge of Allah (25:2, 33, 38). However, although all people do have freedom to make their own decisions, they do not know what their destiniy will be. Muslims know that they are khalifah (deputies of vicegerents) of Allah on this earth.

Allah revealed his guidance to the prophets and messengers at different times. These are named in the Quran.

Muslims believe in all the prophets and messengers. Allah's guidence to mankind began with His messages to Adam, and was completed with the messages given to Muhammad (s.a.w.) in the Quran, the final revealed truth of Allah. The Quran states clearly and accurately the message of Allah which the followers of earlier prophets have lost, and which is true for all ages, places and conditions. In it is written that all Muslims should know about Allah, and also what they should do (halal) and what they are not allowed to do (haraam). It was sent down to Muhammad (s.a.w.) by the angel Jibrael (gabriel) over a period of twenty-two to twenty-three years.

Angels are a special creation of Allah. They were created from divine light to perform special functions, and they do what Allah commands them. Some angels are busy recording everything that man does. They are called respected recorders (kirama katibun). Every single word that is said and deed that is done are recorded by the angels (50:18). Angels will come to those in heaven who always obey Allah's commands, but they will throw the wrong-does and the sinful into hell (39:71-74).

Allah's greatest favour to mankind is His guidance contained in the Books of Revelation. The pure, perfect and most useful knowledge comes only from Allah, and a Muslim believes in all the books mentioned in the Quran. They are the Suhuf-Ibrahim - Scrolls of Ibrahim (Abraham), the Taurat - the Torah or Laws of Musa (moses), the Zabur - Psalms of Dawud (David) and the Injil - Gospel of Isa (Jesus).<

Of the divinely revealed books, only the Quran exists in its original form and language. The revelation of the Quran began in A.D. 610 at a desert mount (Hiraa) near Makkah. The first revelation was:

Read in the name of our God who created - created man out of a clot of blood. Read, your God is most generous who taught by the pen. Taught man what he did not know. (96:1-5)

The last revelation was:

This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed my favour upon you and have chosen for you Islam as your way of life. (5:3)

The Quran is written in Arabic, and was recorded as it was being revealed, under the personal supervision of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.). It has survivided over many centuries until the present day in its original form without any change. The Quran has 30 parts (ajzaa), 114 chapters (suras) and 6 236 verses (ayat). Every word of it is in the hearts of millions of Muslim who memorise it and recite it every day. Every Muslim is required to learn the Quran and the occasions of its revelations.

The subject matter of the Quran is man and his ultimate goal in life. It encompasses all spheres of life on earth and life after death. It contains principles, doctrines and directions for every aspect of human behaviour and activity, including specific ordained penalties.
