Scoring in regional and state meets
The top 5 finisher's position are totaled and the team with the lowest number of points wins. Well, not exactly.
Several factors enter into the scoring. When an individual runner makes it to regional or state but their team does not, that runner is not included in the team totals. It is as though they were not even at the meet. For example, if the 3rd and 5th runners at regionals were not one of the teams that qualified, to calculate team total you would use:
Actual Position..............Team Position
1....................................1
2....................................2
3
4....................................3
5
6....................................4
7....................................5
Can the 6th and 7th runner help the team? Yes! If there is a tie, the 6th runner is the first tie-breaker. Also, if our 6th runner finishes ahead of a competitor's 5th runner, they get the extra point added to their team totals. Same for the 7th runner.
