1/4 Mile Action
This is Simon's old drag car, I never got to get
it to the track (money restrictions!). Apparently it had a 13B
turbo engine and cut a mid-11. It now resides somewhere in Alice
Springs, If anyone has seen it lately at the track I would be
very interested in hearing from them.
This unusual looking machine has been
featured in Fast Fours and Rotaries. It has a Series 4 EFI Turbo
engine and it has run a 10.4 at 120mph. To be updated, this page
is under construction!!!
Calder Park Street Meet News
*Calder Park Street meet 7/5/99
On Friday night the Victorian weather held out for the monthly street meet. The Rotary turnout was moderate but a few good times were made! Simon Bonney of this page set a PB of 13.30@105mph in his turbocharged RX4 coupe with street tyres and stock diff. A 12 second time was in reach if it weren't for gearbox troubles! The old RX5 unit just wouldn't go into 3rd. Out of the six runs it went into 3rd only 3 times! Heathcote here he comes!!!!!
Vlad Berak, of the untubbed 9sec 808, made an appearance in a customers car, a RX4 sedan, running the trusty carby fed TO4 turbo setup. On its second run ever cut a best of a sensational 10.29, this car is now Australia's fastest RX4!
Chris Dalton of Dalton Automotive had a couple of runs testing out his new suspension setup, with less than ideal launches still managed to cut a 'slow for him' 9.90 @144mph !!!!!!!!!He will be back to better his PB of 9.23 @147mph! Stay tuned!!!!
Other cars of interest were - a stock looking RX3 coupe running a 13b turbo managed a 12.66 @110mph
a MK1 escort with 4 cylinder turbo ran a very impressive 10.75
a Datto 200B station wagon with a L18 turbo ran a 14.0

Jamboree Drag Update!!!!!
On Sat the 13th of June Willowbank Raceway Qld Australia hosted the Four Cylinder and Rotary Jamboree, and the Drag event proved to be mighty spectacular, with new Rotary records being set!!!!!
Maztech and their insane Rx3 have done it again, setting an absolutely amazing 8.76@155mph!!!!!!!!, all with it's twin turbo 13B, and a big sniff of Nitrous!!
Next to make waves was the Pac Performance Rx2 running a fantastic 9.03@145mph!!!
Mazfix broke out their new prostreet 20B turbo Powerglide trannied Rx7 and on only the car's second meet ever cut a 9.6!! Wow!! Keep an eye on this one.
Vlad Berak and his killer 808 ran a personal best of 9.98!!!!! Amazing for a genuine street car with NO TUBS in sight!!!!! Good work Vlad. Vlad has just reached his personal best with an "engine destroying" 9.67!
Overall, the Rotaries put on a fantastic show for all, with the drag times times absolutely tumbling!!!!!! This shows how serious Rotary Power is!!!!
Thankyou very much to Marc Stolk and Peter Lawrence for this information - good work boys!, you got to see the show in person!!

*Calder Park update - 5/6/98 (Finally!!)
Well, once again a Rotary Powered vehicle was the fastest car of the night, it's a tough job but someone's got to do it! The Rotary turnout was quite good and most put in an excellent performance.
Star of the night was the Maztech Rx3. Running the trusty twin turbo Microtech injected 13B with a sniff of nitrous oxide, the orange coupe put on a performance which got everyone in the crowd on their feet and watching ( even V8 Neanderthals). First run of the night was a cool 9.19 @150 mph(!!) with massive wheelstands in first and second! On the next run Anthony tried a little too hard and spun up the wheels off the line (wish I could spin up 33inch slicks!), resulting in a 'slow' 9.44. On his final run Anthony then cut a very consistant 9.20 @ 150 mph. This car is awfully impressive to watch and really showed the V8 brigade how serious a Rotary drag car can be.
Vlad Berak's killer 808 attended the meet but remained on the trailer in the pits all night.....maybe he wanted to watch a little???? He'll be back next month.
Also of interest was the silver Rx3 coupe with a Chris Dalton built 13B turbo running straight LPG. Street tyres, a 3.9 locker and standard boost, the silver coupe set a very impressive 12.50 @ 110mph!
Various other quick rotaries made an appearance, of which I don't know the owners....
Series 1 Rx7.....13B turbo 13.66!!!
Rx4 coupe 13B turbo 13.50
Rx2 Coupe (nice white one with a front spoiler) ran a 14.85 with it's extend-bridge 13B
And two neat Rx3 sedans running low 15's.
Other drag news - Chris Dalton's HiRpm R100 drag car is nearly ready to race. His new Jerrico gearbox is now fitted (with new fabricated transmission tunnel), and the previous 'Geelong style' 13B turbo carby setup has been replaced with Microtech efi - Chris is itching to get back out on the track and is definitely looking for 9's..... ...Stay tuned for when Chris hits the strip.

Calder Park update - 27/4/98
Sorry folks not much news. Calder Park raceway is laying a new surface for their dragstrip and has limited cars that are faster than 11 sec to only practice startline launches! So the big boys haven't been out for while. Stay tuned for when they return.

*Calder Park Street Meet update - 6/2/98!!
Calder put on an average meet on Friday night with most cars getting only 2 runs, but some quick Mazdas still made an appearance.
VLAD BEREK was back again with his mad 808 13B turbo continuing his 'only a matter of time' search for a 9 second pass - unfortunately not tonight 8-(. On Vlad's first run he cruised through for a 10.15. On his next run a really gave it shit and the crowd went crazy as he revved the balls off the 13B. First gear, Second gear, Third gear miss, miss, BANG!!! - lots of smoke, say good night turbo! Vlad will be back next month. 8-)
DARREN DALTON raced his 13B turbo R100 with 2 main mods since last time. He has fitted a larger turbo/carby setup and out back fitted 2 of Goodyear's best slicks. Darren was getting bulk traction and lifting the front 6 inches off the ground - he said he was quite pleased with the tyres! Unfortunately 3rd Gear leaning out probs caused him to have to back off - next time mixtures should be setup so keep your eye on him.
CHRIS DALTON raced on Friday night aswell, but not in his 10 sec R100, instead a customer's Rx3 coupe. The car runs a stock 13B series 4 turbo running straight gas with a 3.9 locked rear end. On his 1st and only run Chris set a 13.1 at 105 mph!!, with a less than perfect start!! The car will run 12's not a problem.
An Unknown (to me) Rx2 extend port 13B with full exhaust ran a 13.8. Extremely impressive!!
Grant Williams and his Rx7 put on a show for us all. He was having a bit of a test and tune with his 13B turbo Gerrico 5 speed full chassis Rx7. Grant ran a 10.2 at 94 mph.....that's right 94 mph - he shut down at half track and coasts through for a low 10......I can only dream.....Last week at a pro am meet Grant ran a 9.28! His car is running very consistently now.
MORE NEWS!! The man with the fastest 323 in the world is soon be to back. After destroying his 323 in a roll over on the street, Leigh Gerbach has a new project nearing completion. Leigh now has a half chassis tubbed Series 2 Rx7 which I assume will be powered by his trusty 'Geelong Style' 13B turbo. With extremely Fat slicks and a massive rear wing, this will be the car that will get him into the 9's I'm sure. Stay tuned for more info!!!!!

*Calder Street meet update - 19/12/97
Friday the 19th was the last Street meet this year and the big gun Mazdas came out with records in mind!
VLAD BEREK has reset the fastest "street rego'd rotary" official time with his killer 808 13B turbo sedan. He ran an absolutely incredible 10.01 at 135mph!!!!!! ( soooo close!!). This was early in the night, with the air temp still being warm, but unfortunately this was going to be his only run, as when he shifted into 4th and got on the boost, the motor let go! ( and still ran 135mph!!!!!). 9 second quarters are now just a formality for Vlad, but we'll have to wait until next year for the big news!
ANOTHER man on a mission for 9's was CHRIS SEARS. After last months tremendous performance he was certainly fired up. Although unfortunately he couldn't better last month's 10.33. Chris managed a best of 10.7 on the night, having Nitrous Oxide probs - after a few disputes, the problem was found to be the Nos bottle was empty!!!! After fitting a freshly charged bottle Chris hit the track, then the grass, crossed the centre line, and then nearly into the grass again - i.e. with the full nitrous bottle back on board he had a bit of trouble controlling the extra power!! He'll be back next year ( if Calder let him!!!!).
HELEN form Maztech made an appearance in her 12A turbo Rx4 Sedan and ran a very respectable 13.2 at 102mph. This car has been getting faster and faster as the year has progressed and is quite a neat street car.
ALSO of interest was a 12A turbo 808 wagon which ran 16 -17's , hhmmm, the potential is there but something isn't quite right.
OTHER DRAG NEWS - Darren Dalton has set a personal best at Heathcoate raceway in his R100, bettering his 12.01 with a great 11.70. Keep your eye on our Mazda Image Gallery in the next few weeks for Darren's car - on soon 8-).
The MAZTECH Rx3 just gets faster and faster - at a Calder competition night a few weeks the car ran a sensational 9.12 at 147 mph!!! The Rx3 is now running twin turbos on it's 13B and a GERRICO 5 Speed manual gearbox. I think we'll be seeing 8's soon!!!
That's all for now - check back later for more drag news. At the moment we are setting up a Video Blaster card and are hoping to have some grouse drag pics/movies soon!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Friday 7th of Nov Calder Park Raceway held it's monthly 'legal off street drag' meet. It was a good night for the Mazda's with quite a few personal bests being set.
SIMON BONNEY (of this page!) raced his Rx4 coupe with very pleasing results. Running his 13B turbo at 11 psi, with STREET tyres and a SINGLE SPINNING 3.9 diff ran a pb of 13.57 at 100mph!! This was a fantastic effort. By next time Simon may have some race tyres and a locked 4.1 or 4.4 diff - times will be tumbling! Stay tuned.
CHRIS SEARS' Rx2 sedan set some amazing times for a street car. Running a 13B turbo (Geelong style) and now Nitrous with M&H slicks he ran a best of 10.33 at 133mph!!! This was his third run at about 7pm, and unfortunately broke a throttle cable - leaving us all wondering how much faster he would've run with the colder air later in the night!??! This car has NO TUBS and is a genuine street car! 8-)
VLAD and his V8 killing 13B turbo 808 sedan couldn't replicate his best of 10.10 at 139 mph (!!!!!) last month at Calder. He had serious clutch trouble with slippage in 3rd and 4th gears - although very disappointed he still ran a 10.5 at 135mph with not much effort at all. Vlad's car is the biggest street sleeper of all, looking like a grandma's white 808 down at the shopping centre!! This car has NO TUBS and stock looking 13" rims with Mickey Thompsons on the back.
DARREN DALTON ran a best of 12.01 at 120mph (so close!!!) in his 13B turbo (yet again!) R100. Big brother Chris left his tubbed 10.47 sec 'Hi-RPM' R100 at home.
Other wizzbangs of interest included a yellow turbo Rx2 sedan running 11.8 sec, a Bridgeport Rx3 coupe running 13.3 sec 8-), and a very strange looking Capella which cruised through for a 13.0 !! - Drivetrain unknown, I didn't get a chance to have a look.
Overall, the Rotary's absolutely kicked the piece of shit V8 butt's - they didn't even come close - the best V8 street car ran a high 10 (ha ha).The fastest car of the night was a pro stock Torana about 1" off the ground with an absolute mountain of an engine sticking out of the bonnet and giant tubs with a 3/4 chassis - it ran 9.27 at 145mph. Hardly a street car.
Stay tuned for further Mazda dominance.
Simon's timecard!!
