Eat Right Pyramid

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Recent statistics from the federal government show more than 60 percent of Americans are overweight. In an effort to lower that, the Mayo Clinic has released their version of a food pyramid. What’s the difference, and how can it help you lose weight? It changes the focus of your diet.

Dietitian Zonya Foco, R.D., of Walled Lake, Mich., says, "Fruits and vegetables should be a main whether it’s the bottom of the pyramid, the center of the pyramid."

Experts say you need seven servings. It may sound hard to get, but does not have to be. "Remember to have a serving of fruit or vegetable at every single meal and every single snack," says Foco.

As for the carbohydrates, the new guide pushes healthier choices.

Foco says, "What we’re looking for is a whole grain product."

And watch how much you eat. The typical restaurant meal is seven servings. The new guide recommends only four to eight all day! The new food pyramid also gives more guidance when it comes to fat.

Foco says, "Food guide pyramid has never given us direction on types of fats, just limits all types of fat."

Now good fats from nuts and olive oil are separate from sweets. While serving sizes may still cause confusion, Foco says, "You should really trust your body and listen internally because it will tell you when you’re satisfied."

Don’t forget focus on fruits and vegetables.

The new healthy eating pyramid also includes physical activity as part of the daily requirements. It is located in the middle to represent the central role it plays in weight management and healthy living. It also stresses eating low calorie foods from each group.
