Meet the Phenomenal Grant Logsdon A teen with real Ability

Grant is 18 and has cerebral palsy, as well as being legally blind. While Grant has always been educated in regular education classes, half of his classes are honors courses. Even though he does have an assistant to help him write and assist with his physical needs, Grant has a 3.8 GPA (Grade Point Average) on his own.
Last January, Grant went to Washington D.C. for a conference with other young people with disabilities where he managed a discussion on overcoming problems. While there he met Judy Heumann, Assistant Secretary to the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services. At that time Grant also interviewed Ms. Heumann for an article to be seen in the E-zine magazine in which Grant is an integral, important part.
In Grants words, “I love all outdoor activities. Even though I use a power wheelchair, I go camping and have even been mountain climbing with the help of a dear man, who is like a dad to me. His name is Jerry Durall and he has been a certified special education teacher for 23 years. He was one of my teachers a few years ago, and is like part of our family now.
Grant did the mountain climbing when he was in middle school, where his sister and other students carried him in a plastic sled up and down the mountain. In this way Grant was able to have a cave experience - - to touch, feel, and see what stalagmites and stalactites in a cave are really about and what they look like.
Grant, now a junior at Atherton High School in Lexington, Kentucky, has had a diagnosis of CP (Cerebral Palsy) since he was 11 months old. As a “premie” he had an infantile seizure when he was two days old.
Grant is a true auditory learner; when he hears a lecture or discussion, he has the ability to master materials discussed and remarkably, never forget them. WOW !!! Such a memory!!!!!
He takes four courses now, Biology II, Business Law, English, and Algebra II, and two study hall periods to do homework etc. He reduced his load from his previous six classes because two years ago he was very ill. He is a member of the Beta Club, a National Honor Society.
Grant is one of 5 children in which there are two sets of twins. His twin sisters Rhonda and Robin are 26 years old, his sister Renee and his brother Ryan are 15 and they also attend the same High School. Grant says that he has a celebrity twin too; he says his twin is Dolly Parton...several years ago he asked to meet her. She was kind enough to do that and she was trying to figure out all the twins in his family. She said, “Well Grant, where’s your twin ?” When he told her that he didn’t have one, she said, “Grant I’ll be your twin. We don’t look much alike, I have red hair!!!!! She writes to him from time to time, and has sent him things like autographed CD’s. etc.
Grant wants to be in business for himself some day, checking companies for their accessibility and how they meet the ADA qualifications.
We’d like to thank Doc Linda Stein for telling all of America about Grant.
