Does anyone remember the beginning of the women's lib movement?  One of the facts put forward was that when girls learned about lipstick and boys they cut back on the academic activities.  This argument was made to explain why boys did better academically that girls did.  Take a good look at this photo.  There are 14 people in it.  Nine of them are girls and 5 are boys.  I guess who ever made the above statement never looked at Malverne High School.
