- Oliver Stone is perhaps one of the most controversial directors of our time with his masterpieces like Any Given Sunday, Nixon, Heaven & Earth and Born on the Fourth of July. Stone credits director Martin Scorsese (his first teacher) for helping him to focus and channel his rage.
- After 15-months in combat with the United States army in Vietnam, Stone brought much of his war experience into his movies like Platoon.
- Stylistically Stone has strayed from his straight-forward movies like Fourth of July, to creative camera work. An example would be Stone’s tribute to Jim Morrison in the Doors, where Stone tries to capture the mind-frame of Morrison. The result is one big acid-trip. His stylistic camerawork can be seen in other films such as Any Given Sunday, Natural Born Killers, and his strangest film to date: U-turn.
