- This week, Peter discussed religion in film. Always a controversial topic, religion has found its way into cinema in such films as Denys Arcand's Jesus of Montreal, Kevin Smith's Dogma, Monty Python's Life of Brian, Martin Scorsese's Last Temptation of Christ, Lee Demarbre's Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter and the most recent starring Jim Carrey--Bruce Almighty. Jim Carrey returns to comic form in his latest film to date. Co-starring Jennifer Aniston, Peter found the film very entertaining without cause for offense unlike Monty Python's Life of Brian.
- Jake Kasdan, son of Lawrence, has done it again. After debuting with the awesome, overlooked Zero Effect, he returns with his hilarious sophomore effort Orange County. This movie is just so much fun and has such an amazing cast featuring Catherine O'Hara, Jack Black, Harold Ramis, John Lithgow, Colin Hanks and Skuyler Fisk. For the longest time I've been putting off seeing this movie due to its producers--MTV. I didn't want the good vibe I had from the Zero Effect to be spoiled by some product focused at a certain demographic. Watching the film, you can see how it can be marketed to that audience, but at the same time, the writing by Mike White is so clever and the acting is so convinvcing and real that it goes beyond its target market. If you decide to rent this film, I highly recommend getting the DVD and watching the Interstitials first. Better yet, watch the Zero Effect first then Orange County. And if you really enjoyed OC, watch it again with the director and writer commentary, it's just as entertaining as the film itself!
