Insert Clip-Art, Logo or Graphic (picture) into Mailing Labels

1. In Quick Training Tips #60 Bob Roman asked "In Word 97 when I try and insert clip art into my labels using Autotext entries, the clip art shows up on the first column but not the 2nd and 3rd column. What am I doing wrong?"

Although there are other ways to place a graphic beside text in a label, the following is the most efficient-although it entails a fair amount of setup time. You can create a prototype of your label contents by inserting the desired graphic in a document and using WordArt or a text box to produce the label text that will appear beside it. After you scale and position these elements to fit your labels, you need to group them, cut them to the clipboard and paste them back into your document as an inline picture. Once your label contents are converted to an inline picture, you save the picture as an AutoText entry.
That is the tedious part. The rest is pretty straightforward:
Open the Labels tab and insert and center the AutoText entry in the Address text box. Click New Document to create a label document, fine tune the formatting if necessary, and then print your labels as you normally would. The following steps summarize setting up the label contents:
1. Open a document and choose Picture from the Insert menu
2. Select Clip Art from the Picture submenu, choose the desired image and click Insert
3. Right-click on the image and choose Format Picture from the shortcut menu
4. Click the size tab in the Format Picture dialog box, enter the desired percentage in the Height text box and click OK
5. Click the Drawing button to display the Drawing toolbar, then click the Text box button and draw a text box on the page
6. Type the desired address information within the text box, select all of the text and apply the desired formatting
7. Widen the text box if necessary to prevent wrapping, then position it beside the graphic
8. Select the text box and graphic, click the Draw button, choose Align or Distribute, and then select the Align Middle command
9. With the text box and graphic selected, click Draw and choose Group
10. With the grouped item selected, click cut
11. Choose Paste Special form the Edit menu, select Picture from the As list box, deselect the Float over Text check box and click OK
12. Select the pasted picture, press Alt and F3 (or choose AutoText from the Insert menu), type a name for the AutoText item and click OK

The following steps describe how to create the labels:
1. Choose Envelopes and Labels from the Tools menu and click the Labels tab
2. Click the Options button, select the desired label from the Product Number List box and click OK
3. In the Address text box, type the Auto Text name created earlier for the grouped items and then press F3
4. Right-click on the information in the Address text box, choose Paragraph from the shortcut menu, select Centered from the Alignment dropdown list in the Paragraph dialog box and click OK
5. Click New Document to create a label sheet that includes your AutoText entry on each label
