|
Various
possible Dutch spellings for son of Haus, based on my speculations from
reading Van Slyke Family history. Don't really know how the "Van"
part got in there. Apparently it means from the village of or from the town
of or area of… but again that is my
guess. Is or was there a village of Haus in the Netherlands? Or Aas or Aus ? |

General
notes: Often expansion meant leaving
an established farm in hands of a sibling or elder child & the main
family moving - usually to adjacent or nearby lands not already settled =
preservation of old family land while using it as a springboard for movement
to new land. |

existed by this early date of Canada. Jacques Cartier, a Breton made a voyage
(or several) around this time. The St. Lawrence River was in early times
known as the Chelogua or Hochelaga (or Ochelaga) River; named by Cartier. The
village of Hochelaga is where Montreal exists now. Cartier built a fort at the harbor of Ste. Croix. Canada = north of St. Lawrence River &
"Norumbega" = south of St. Lawrence River. ""Canada"
derives from Cannata, Iroquois-Huron word meaning a collection of buildings
or a town. Quebec = Kebec "where the stream is obstructed" Mont Royal = Montreal. French fort built on
a mountain. Other place names:
Montmorency & Chambriant, both between Montreal & Quebec on the south
shore of St. Lawrence. Honguedo on the south shore. |

According
to Jones, the actual home of origin for the Haus family was Klein
Altenstadten near 6300 Wetzlar (15 km. W. of Giessen). The Marburg Archives
contain some old lists of Shrove Tuesday hens, garden taxes, and subject
money (110 Acc. 1939/31, No. 167) for Amt Konigsbert and Hohensolms. A Peter
Haus was noted at Altenstedten there in 1558, 1559, 1565 |
