Prologue

*********************

Queen Serenity, late of the Moon Kingdom, gazed at the cold desert that surrounded her. Her spirit form glided over the moon rocks, taking in the desolation and the emptiness.

"To think that it came to this," she whispered. "My kingdom…gone for over two centuries."

As her spirit form became stronger with borrowed energy coming from the core of the moon, she wondered why she was being called from the Spirit Plane, to the Mortal one. As the question formed in her mind, she felt a wisp of presence, the answer to her unformed question brushing against her other thoughts.

You're duty as Queen…the last Scion….

"That's right," Queen Serenity recalled her last night on the mortal plane…the night of her daughter's coronation, bestowing upon her not so much as the Crown of the Moon, but rather their universe's greatest treasure, the Ginzuishou. "That night my daughter was to be made the official heir to the crystal, but it was interrupted by that evil menace, Beryl and Metallia. Because of that, I am still the acknowledged Scion of Ginzuishou."

Continue the circle

"Yes, I must continue the succession," Queen Serenity said mechanically. A painful memory sliced through her thoughts all of a sudden, making her wince and caused her to fall on her knees. "But she is dead. There is no heir!"

We are a circle…we never die.

"But she's dead," the fallen queen sobbed, repeating over and over again the obvious truth.

Ky-Lin protects…the Guardians protect

Queen Serenity's sobs quieted as she listened to the voice. "I put their spirits in a glass ball and sent them away. I don't know where they are now."

The Guardians protect…Ginzuishou protects

A beam of light dissolved out from the darkness of space, growing until it became a column of light.

Continue the circle. The statement was a command that resounded throughout space. Queen Serenity was compelled to listen to it.

She waited. A glow appeared from inside the pillar of light, growing bigger until Serenity had to close her eyes against the brightness. She felt a warmth coming towards her, and she slowly opened her eyes in awe as the pure facets of the crystal slowly made it way to her.

"Ginzuishou," she whispered in amazement. She had thought that it was separated into seven when she banished the shadow warriors of the Negaverse. But then, she knew with a mother's instinct that this was the actual heart of the crystal. It was the part that binds the Scion to it. The other parts were but extensions of the real crystal.

Serenity made to reach for it, but just as her hands were about to cradle it, she hesitated. The crystal waited, pulsating with energy.

Serenity thought to the many times that she had watched her daughter live her carefree life, free of the responsibility and the heartaches that being the Scion brought. If her daughter was to be re-born soon as a mortal, Serenity wanted her to be a normal mortal. But neither did she want to ignore the commands of a higher being.

The Dark is coming. The voice seemed to hesitate, then continue in a softer, gentler voice. Continue the circle. Ginzuishou protects.

At the mention of the Dark, Serenity closed her mind to her doubts and reached out for the Ginzuishou. When her hands closed around it, it disappeared and she was filled with warmth and light. Bound once more with Ginzuishou, she regained her corporeal state. The Moon Scepter appeared in her hands and she called out, "Moon Crystal Power!!"

The pillar of light suddenly expanded and grew until it encompassed the entire moon, transforming it into the forgotten realm that it was. Grecian pillars appeared, and the outlines of building foundations rose from the ground. The scene that was created was that of the year after the Moon Kingdom fell in the time of the Silver Millennium.

Serenity stood before what was once her throne, a sad and pain-filled expression on her beautiful face. Points of light appeared, raining down slowly from above. She knew they were the glass balls that held her daughter and the rest of her court's souls. She watched as one ball moved away from the others. A heart crystal glowed from within it, brighter than the rest.

"Daughter," Serenity whispered to it. "Forgive me…"

She held the scepter between her and the heart crystal. Closing her eyes, she chanted the words that bestowed her title to her daughter. The princess's heart crystal brightened as the energy of the Ginzuishou flowed to it. Serenity opened her eyes, which was misty from unshed tears. She felt her body fading once again into a spirit form as Ginzuishou left her.

Release all of them…both of them

Serenity shuddered at the voice's command, knowing what it wanted. To release all of the known guardians along with the princess and her court…Serenity couldn't bear to think of the coming future. To release all was to unleash forces beyond even her knowledge. With a heavy heart, she complied. Two more heart crystals appeared, glowing silently and ominously.

Raising her scepter one last time, she broke the glass balls, freeing the other heart crystals within each of them. And with a whoosh, they flew off, casting stardust in their wake. Serenity watched them disappear towards Earth. She especially looked for that of her daughter's.

"Be happy, my daughter."

Worriedly, her eyes followed the trail of the two that was belatedly freed. And she prayed.
