science book prize

The shortlist for the Aventis science book prize has just been announced:

  • Homo Britannicus by Chris Stringer (Penguin Allen Lane)
  • In Search of Memory by Eric R. Kandel (WW Norton & Co)
  • Lonesome George by Henry Nicholls (Macmillan)
  • One in Three by Adam Wishart (Profile Books)
  • Stumbling on Happiness by Daniel Gilbert (Harper Press)
  • The Rough Guide to Climate Change by Robert Henson (Rough Guides)
  • I'll have to admit I haven't read any of them, not even from the longlist. So I am entirely clueless as to who might win or who deserves to win. There was a time when the smart money was placed on any author named Steve (or Steven, Stephen, as in Pinker, Jones, Hawking), but this year there isn't even a Steve in the shortlist :)

Note, however that showbiz credentials failed to propel either Brian May or Dr Who into the shortlist.
