Prometheus Busted

(Michael Martin Murphey)

Prometheus was a good friend of Zeus

But he stole that heavenly fire

He gave it away to the people they say

People were his heart's desire

He couldn't be trusted

So Zeus had him busted

Bound him to a rock with a chain

Lord Zeus has his ways

He can drive a man crazy

By leaving him out in the rain

Prometheus got busted

But his chains are getting rusty

Zeus, won't you turn him loose

Free spirits got to be free

(Turn him loose won't you turn him loose, Zeus)

Trial was unjust

Nothing discussed

Malice of forethought the crime

People condemned him

Supernatural women

Said he was wastin' his time

Down on the earth for what it was worth

Preachers prayed for his soul

But in the end most of his friends

Just left him out in the cold.

*based on the Greek play, "Prometheus Bound".

*Prometheus means 'forethought'.
