October 20, 2006 ![]() Here is another photo from the Mississippi Guitar Festival. This is my student Jared Doner enjoying a light moment during the Adam Holzman masterclass. Adam is a brilliant virtuoso, a dynamic teacher, and just a really funny guy. His masterclass was very informative for the students and his teaching style really inspired me to be a better teacher. After Adam's masterclass, his former pupil and newly appointed Assistant Professor of Guitar at the University of Southern Mississippi, Nicholas Ciraldo, presented an excellent lecture. The lecture centered around the differences of the 1953 published edition of the Villa-Lobos Etudes and the 1928 manuscript housed at the Museo Villa-Lobos in Rio de Janiero. I was aware that there were some substantial indications and even quite a few passages that were omitted from the published version, but I had no idea that the pieces were butchered so badly before they were published. In the past, I believed that the published version of the Etudes was sufficient for study, but after Nicholas' lecture, I am convinced that the publisher did a real disservice to Villa-Lobos, as well as a disservice to guitarists who wish to play his music. There are some earlier manuscripts of the Preludes in the Museo de Vill-Lobos, as well. I tried to get a copy of the etudes, but Stanley Yeates refused to respond to my emails. Neat stuff though!

I'm surprised that Stanley didn't respond. He is usually pretty good about that. You can get a copy of the Etudes directly from Museo Villa-Lobos. Just contact them via email.
