Conway Twill |
'Dead Man'

|
This is a western made in
black and white and stars Johnny Depp. Conway Twill (Michael Wincott)
is one of three bounty hunters who is hired to track down Bill Blake (Johnny
Depp). The film is not a typical western and has some wonderful
black humour. Also in the movie is Iggy Pop dressed in a gingham frock!
Michael, it is told, ad-libbed most of Twill's lines, which are very
funny. Despite looking like a typical mountain man, Twill is a very
lovable character, who for a reason which is not explained in the movie,
sleeps with his teddy bear. |

As Conway (Michael Wincott),
waits for Mr John Dickinson (Robert Mitchum) to arrive, he, Cole
Wilson Lance Henriksen) and Johnny the Kid Pickett (Eugene
Byrd) practice their quick draw on a painting of their prospective
employer. |

 |
As the strange John Dickinson
talks to the men through his stuffed bear, Conway finds the man and the
situation very funny and absurd. |
Conway listens to John Dickinson relay details of the
job. His son killed by Bill Blake, he hires the three bounty hunters to
track down the killer. |
 |
 |
Conway points out that he is used to working alone, and
never has worked with anyone else before. John Dickinson points a
shotgun at Twill and tells him to shut up. |
The three bounty hunters waiting in Dickinson's office.
The office manager (John Hurt) looks on behind them. |

 |
Cole Wilson begins to lose patience with Twill's
incessant chatter and pulls a gun on him. Conway becomes quiet for an
instant, then goes to talk to Johnny, telling the stunned Johnny that
Cole fucked, killed and ate both his parents. |
Asleep with his teddy bear, Conway mutters sweet
nothings in his sleep. When Johnny gets closer to the bear, Twill pulls
a gun on him and warns him not to say a word about the teddy, before
settling to sleep again, pulling the teddy bear closer to him. |
 |
 |
The illiterate Conway Twill is furious when he realizes
that a wanted poster is for the capture of Bill Blake. He can see his
fee quickly disappearing. In a disagreement, Wilson kills Johnny. |
Twill and Cole happen upon a couple of marshals that
Bill Blake has disposed of. As Cole crushes one of their skulls with his
boot, Twill looks on in disgust before walking away. |
