Gary Soneji

'Along Came a Spider'

Gary Soneji (Michael Wincott) is a teacher at an exclusive private school, but we soon realize that this is just a cover and his purpose is far more sinister. Soneji is an extremely clever man, who is devious and criminally pathological. He wants to be remembered as the greatest criminal mind ever and likes to play mind games. Soneji believes that Dr Alex Cross (Morgan Freeman), the Forensic Psychologist, and author is just the right opponent to be a worthy adversary and to accommodate his needs in his quest for notoriety. Dr Cross is helped by Jezzie Flanaghan (Monica Potter), a Secret Service agent who had been assigned to guard Megan Rose, and feels responsible for the girl's fate.

Along Came a Spider was directed by Lee Tomahori.

.

.

Seemingly a normal teacher during a normal working day, Gary Soneji gives his class a lesson on Charles Lindbergh.

.

.

Following the lesson, Soneji calls Megan Rose into his office to discuss an assignment. He accuses her of cheating on one of the papers.
.

.

When Megan looks at the essay and protests that the work isn't hers, Soneji takes advantage and attacks her, jabbing a needle into her neck in order to tranquilize her.

.

.

As Megan fights to free herself from his strong grasp, she claws at Soneji's face and realizes that his skin is a prosthetic covering.
.

.

A young teacher enters Soneji's office and finds him leaning over an unconscious Megan. He tells the young woman to stay with Megan while he goes for help. Locking the door he grabs a computer cable and strangles the woman, before bundling Megan into a unit made up to look like a trolley of computers, and making his escape from the area.

.

.

On his boat, after making his escape from the vicinity of the school, Gary Soneji removes his disguise and we begin to see the real man underneath the carefully applied prosthetics.
.

.

Soneji records the mumbled pleas for help from a drugged Megan, who has been locked in the small cabin of the boat.

.

.

Soneji contacts Dr Alex Cross, a Forensic Psychologist whom he feels will be a worthy adversary. Gary plays the tape recording over the phone and finds the policeman's reaction and attempt to analyze him rather amusing. Soneji gives Cross a clue in the form of a riddle to see if he will be able to solve it.
.

.

After Megan later manages to escape from the boat, her captor gives chase. A fisherman on the shore sees Megan and hears her cries for help, to which he responds, only to be gunned down by Soneji from the boat.

.

.

Soneji drags Megan back into the boat and wraps her up in a coat. He informs her that she has caused the fisherman's death by not doing as she was told. He insists that she must behave herself from there on, saying, "Say yes Mr. Soneji".  The terrified girl, seeing her situation as hopeless, agrees to his creepy demands.
.

.

Soneji begins to put his real purpose into action when he communicates over the Internet with Dimitri, the son of the Russian President, who is Megan's friend at school. Pretending to be the kidnapped girl, Soneji arranges to meet Dimitri outside the school.

.

.

Having shot two policemen, Soneji disguises himself as a police officer, and makes his way towards Dimitri, who has sneaked out of the school to meet Megan. Unaware that Alex Cross and Jezzie are watching the area, Gary Soneji makes his way through the rain towards Dimitri..
.

.

His carefully laid out plans for kidnapping Dimitri having been foiled, Soneji manages to escape capture and returns to his boat. His years of patient planning confounded, the man is furious and his mood extremely dangerous.

.

.

With Megan now of no more use to Soneji, he decides to kill her, but is shocked to find that she is no longer in the locked cabin. He turns away then looks back into the small room, unable to believe that she is really gone. The door had still been locked, so he realizes that someone else must have taken her.
.

.

Out of the blue, Megan's parents receive a ransom demand for $10 million of diamonds. Following the news bulletin reporting the drop-off, Soneji visits Dr Cross. He overpowers Jezzie, who opens the door, and sits with Alex discussing the situation and the game he is playing. Alex realizes that Soneji has no real clue as to the value of the ransom demand.

.

.

Soneji talks emotionally about his childhood, claiming that at 15 years of age he had set fire to his house while his parents slept. Dr Cross begins to see inside the mind of the man he is dealing with, and doesn't pull the punches when he tells Soneji what he thinks of him.
.

.

Angered by Alex's words, and unwilling to be defeated, Soneji grabs Jezzie, intending to take her as a hostage, but the secret agent stabs him in his leg and makes her escape. Alex Cross takes advantage of the situation and as Soneji raises his gun to shoot the policeman, Alex fires the shotgun.

.

.

Shot at point blank range by Alex Cross, Soneji lies dead, leaving no clues as to Megan's whereabouts. However, things are not as they seem, and Dr Cross feels that events are about to follow a different route, with many a twist to the tale.
