Notes for Jean-Baptiste Marcotte/Marie "Otter" Neshkeek

From the records of Cindy Appleby's research at http://chandonai.tripod.com/in2.html
"As to how Jean Baptiste (son of Charles Agacouchin and Margurite Marcot) got the last name Chandonai...well, his father, Agacouchin, of the Potawatomi, died before J.B. was baptised, and apparently his mother died or disappeared. I cannot find a deathe record on her or Agacouchin. J.B. went to live with his morther's sister Charlotte, and her husband, Charles Chandonnet where by J.B. was considered adopted by his uncle and took on the name. J.B. was known as Shadney among the Potawatomi. J.B.'s aunts Magdelaine Laframboise and Theresa Schindler (maiden names Marcotte) became quite famous on Mackinac Island. They married fur traders, and when their husbands died, they took over the business and became quite wealthy. These women are supposed to be listed on the Sault Ste. Marie Chippewa Rolls, but Marguerite seems to be lost."

The 1780 Census of Ft. St. Joseph near present day Niles, Michigan lists John Baptiste Marcot and Marie Neskech (Indian) with 4 children.
