Notes for Claude Caron

CLAUDE CHARON

Another different pioneer than Robert Charon arrived to Quebec, June 4 1634, contributed as of 17th century to the essaimage of the Charon patronym. Claude Charon was baptized in1641, born in the parish of St-Jean d' Aubrigoux.

Claude Charon was engaged as servant of the Jesuits, 24 years old, according to the census of 1666. He was confirmed the same year in the Cape-of-the-Madeleine.

He was said to be in Laprairie, September 22 1672. With the census of 1681, he lived in Laprairie, 40 years old.

About 1670, Claude Charon married in St-Jean d' Aubrigoux, LePuy district, of évêché Clermont, in Auvergne, Madeleine Varennes, baptized in 1641, who was perhaps the Daughter of Claude Varennes, who died in April 1672 in Laprairie, originating in St-Jean d' Aubrigoux.

Together, the couple Claude Charon and Madeleine Varennes had nine children including four sons; two of those died at a young age, whereas the two others, Claude Charon and Vital Charon, married the sisters Élisabeth Perthuis and Marie Perthuis, daughters of Pierre Perthuis and Claude Damisé, in 1695 and January 24 1698, respectively in Montreal.

It is the couple Vital Charon and Marie Perthuis which weaves us the link in this genealogy. Of the eight children whom they had, Marie Charon who was born on April 19, 1702 and baptized the 21st, in Lachine, married on December 14, 1721, Jean-Baptiste Brault dit Pomainville, born on July 20 1699, son of George Brault, dit Pomainville, and of Barbe Brunet.

ClaudeCaron died at the 70 years age, in Montreal and was buried on September 18, 1708. Madeleine Varennes who was 40 years old with the census of 1681, died at 92 years the advanced age, buried in Montreal, March 18, 1727.

********* ROBERT CHARON

The ancestor of the first Charon family is called Robert, born about 1611, but it is unknown where he was born, perhaps Saint-Onge. He arrived to Quebec, June 4 1634, Whit Sunday.

October 25 1637, Robert married Marie Crevet, in the Chapel of Notre-Dame de la Recouvrance. She was from Bénouville, not far from Caen in Normandy and daughter of Pierre Crevet and Marie LeMercier.

Seven children were born from this union. Four of their children have a link in this description. First of all a girl, Marie Charon, who, in 1656, married Jean Picard, born into 1635 in Picardy, son of Jean Picard and Renee DeSuronne. Marie Charon had a tragic destiny. June 5 1660, a party of eight Huron allied with Iroquois seized her and four children. When the boats reach the point of Lévy, the French, accompanied by Algonquins, intercepted them. In battle Marie Charon received a fatal wound. Their daughter, Louise Picardy, born in 1659, married in 1673, Louis Gane, born in 1643 at St.Come de Vair.

After Marie Charon, a son was born to Robert Charon and Marie Crevet in 1641, Jean-Baptiste Charon. He married in 1661, Marguerite Gagnon, daughter of Jean Gagnon and Marguerite Cauchon. She gave him ten children, including two girls who concern us in this genealogical description. Marguerite Gagnon, born in 1668, married in 1685, Noel Pare, then the second, Genevieve Gagnon born in 1677, married in 1694, Jean Bernier and her second husband was Jacques Rodrigue on July 7, 1718, in Cape St-Ignace.

Then, the third child of the couple, Robert/Marie, Catherine Charon, was born on November 23 1649 and, married in 1662, the ancestor Jacques Dodier, Champaisant, district of Mamers, évêché Mans, in Maine, in France. Catherine Charon gave him five children, whose three Dodier girls concern us.
The ancestor Jacques Dodier died on November 30 1677, in Beaupré and his widow Catherine Charon remarried in 1680, to Pierre Dupre.

The first Dodier girl, Bores, born in 1664,married in 1680, Ignace Gagné. The second, Anne Dodier, born in 1671, married in 1689, Noël Simard. Then the third, Claire Dodier, born in 1675, married in 1690, her brother-in-law, Pierre Simard, brother of Noel.

The last of the family of the Caron/Crevet pioneers, Aimee Charon, born towards 1656, married in 1677, Noël Langlois, known as Traversy and gave him five children of which Marie-Anne Langlois, born about 1675, married Jean Côté, in 1694.

The death of Robert Charon seems to have occurred in a way as sudden as unexpected. He was only 44 or 45 years old, and died on July 8 1656, cause of death unknown.

July 27 1666, ten years after the death of Robert Charon, Marie Crevet married Noël Langlois, widower of Francoise Garnier. Marie died, November 22 1695, at age 86.
