Notes for Jacques dit Charleville Chauvin

He and brothers Joseph and Nicolas accompanied Bienville in 1700 to Biloxi. Jacques is listed in July 25, 1700 Census of Biloxi. In 1718, he stayed in Mobile when his three brothers (Louis had arrived in Mobile in 1706), moved to the new settlement in New Orleans.

From Giraud's "History of French Louisiana", Volume 1, page 279: " Bienville, Jacques Chauvin, (Nicolas) Chauvin de la Freniere, Andre and Francois Carriere owned Indians or Indian families. The slave children were baptized and augmented the servant personnel unless the masters sold them to a higher bidder, and a few did so unscrupulously. As in the preceding years, the practice of free unions (intermarriage) continued as a result of the use of Indians as domestics. The minister had still not taken a definite stand on the question of mixed marriages, although he continued to condemn the use of 'concubine slaves'."

WFT 2-1040 shows his death date as August 17, 1732.
