Hint No. 22 - Iraq, oil & finances

Actually the e-mail of today was supposed to contain only the missing translation of the last “Hint”-Mail. But, “nothing comes exactly as one has planned it.” Furthermore, President Bush’s speech to the American Nation on October 7, 2002 (besides, the “anniversary” of the bombardments on Afghanistan) almost demand a statement in some way. The decision on a war against the Iraq seems to be made even in public and therefore just a question of time – the official consent of the US Senate confirms that (http://www.spiegel.de/politik/ausland/0,1518,217661,00.html). Step by step they converge their aim – initiating a war in a critical region, which will not only heavily affect the Iraq but most probably also half of Asia. There is hardly anyone who talks about Osama Bin Laden anymore, even less would talk about the living conditions of the Afghan people. Countries, persons and targets are exchangeable if money is the reason. Large parts of the population of the USA, England, Italy and other countries went on the streets to demonstrate against Bush’s obvious warfare. In Germany it remained pretty silent so far. Actions like the ATTAC demonstration (www.attac.org) in Cologne on September 14th, 2002, with more than 40,000 participants may give hope that also in Germany it should be possible to mobilize people for big societal issues, even if the main concern in Cologne wasn’t the war against Iraq.
Are we doing just too fine? Is the Iraq too far away? Or has the turn of chancellor Schröder in this matter triggered a “We are against it anyway!”-justification in our (sheep’s) heads?

(While writing this e-mail they announced October 26, 2002, as a world-wide demonstration day against the threatening Iraq War. Also see - http://www.jungewelt.de/2002/10-12/007.php - only in German).

It seems to me, that Mr Bush and his advisers & supporters have achieved exactly the things they wanted. To torture the world-wide public with an eloquence and finally to face them with a situation which just needs a little fake to call for an attack. I assume – and I would be pleased, if I were wrong – that it just needs an Iraqi plane flying somewhere wrong and the American Government and its allies (whoever they will be) can do exactly the things which they have discussed in public since the beginning of this year and which had been planned for even longer. Actually, the war has already started since there have been several shootings at Iraqi planes (Link: http://www.heute.t-online.de/ZDFheute/artikel/0,1367,POL-0-11784,00.html - in German only) – but no-one seems to gett notice of that.

The most probably soon forgotten “Bush-Hitler affair” of Mrs Däubler-Gmelin made the SPIEGEL write the following on September 19, 2002 (http://www.spiegel.de/politik/deutschland/0,1518,214597,00.html - in German only)):
“The main motive for Bush strict attitude towards the Iraq is not as widely assumed the oil supply, said Däubler-Gmelin. For: “The Americans have enough oil themselves.” The reason for the preparations for war can rather be found in the US domestic politics. Due to the economic crisis in the USA the President has lost a lot of his popularity.”
Well, the Americans have enough oil themselves. Interesting, so we can put our minds at rest. And I almost thought ... Yes, but why don’t they use it then? The word “oil” and possible subsequent conclusions may be too much for the “common man”. No, he needn’t to know that much! That would make the situation only more complicated.
Obviously, the SPIEGEL has noticed that not everyone eludes considering oil as a possible reason, since on October 12, 2002, they had to publish another clarification for the “What – Why – and Why not”:
“You don’t have to go that far as the Indian writer [Arundhati] Roy did, who assumed in the rhetoric rearmament after September 11th already was a calculated rhetorical game for the rearmament for an oil war against the Iraq.
But meanwhile – isn’t that amazing – does the majority of the American population believe that War against the Iraq serves the government as a diversions for the economic problems in their own country.” (Link: http://www.spiegel.de/politik/debatte/0,1518,217953,00.html - in German only)

Well, everyone may bet what the main reason of the Iraq War might be. Oil? Weapons? Terrorism? Democracy? The big losers of this war (the Iraqi people) can be named already before this war has started. But, due to globalisation the number of losers will get multiplied as well. Apart from the always suffering “less developed countries” it may also hit the Western population this time. Some months ago I found on one of the Print-Think web-pages (http://members.shaw.ca/rbham/print%20thinks/currentprint.htm) a statement of an American who put it exactly in a way that many of his countrymen already presage. The reader basically wrote that America may have survived September 11th, but it might not survive the Bush administration.

Regarding the topic “economy crisis” I have embedded a nice photograph (see above) taken in a market street in Cottbus (State of Brandenburg, Germany), end of September 2002. The best profit rate is +0.2 %. Not bad, indeed! J
The DAX came down to about 2600 points last week – these are approximately 30 % of the peak values of the year 2000. Well, is the stock market ill? Or does it just shrink down to a normal – healthy – level?

On September 28, 2000 I found an interview with the American writer Norman Mailer in the FAZ (Frankfurter General Newspaper) which included the following paragraph:

QUESTION: Have you ever possessed shares?
ANSWER: For some time I had a finance broker. One morning he called me telling me, that I had just earned 10,000 Dollar. Ten Thousand Dollar! I used to get such an amount for a novel for which I had had to work two years. How should I get enough energy to take care of my work if the motive had gone to earn money with that? I would never be able to write again! Some days later he called me again informing me that I had just lost 10,000 Dollar. Fantastic, I said,
damned. And since then I have had nothing to do anymore with the stock exchange.

- unfortunately the online article was removed meanwhile. Is that due to some of Mr Mailer’s “Bush-ungracious” words which he uttered during the entire interview?!?!)

Apart from Mr Mailer’s uncomplicated attitude towards „Money“ this paragraph caught my eyes due to another fact. By coincidence I had read the article in the paper version at first and therefore got interested in it. The newspaper belonged to one of my colleagues and that is why I don’t have it here anymore, but as far as I can remember there has been the following remarkableness. In the newspaper they wrote instead of “.. damned.” something like “then I can start writing again.”

Give us your money - we make the best out of it!

What does an editor make do such a thing resp. use such fine-tuning techniques? Would maybe even more shareholders quit this business? Would some people start questioning what they are actually doing with their savings? Or would some people even start thinking about the actual sense or non-sense of money? And what would these people do if they knew that the FAZ editors seem to “cheat” even in such apparently harmless cases.

But admittedly, such things are rather irrelevant if one thinks about the fact how many (or few ?) people scrutinize the events of “September 11th”. Such natty details are rather of the category “peccadillo“.

See you next time. Have a nice, rainless autumn day. Yours, Michael.

PS: You can also forward this e-mail to people you know – I don’t mind that at all.
PS2: All previous articles on www.oocities.org/michwink/911.html have recently been updated.
PS3: For actual reasons: Whoever was responsible for the bomb blast on Bali (Oct 12, 2002), one can be sure that this will be another step in direction of the “global anti-terrorism campaign” – in this or another way.
