Parklea Correctional Centre is located in the outer western suburbs of Sydney NSW Australia. Near the city of Blacktown.
Parklea was officially opened in 1984. It is a variable security institution for maximum, medium and minimum security inmates, both sentenced and unconvicted.
The institution can house up to approximately 400 inmates it has a staff of 150 officers and support personnel. The institution provides a range of industrial and educational programs for young adult male inmates, including work release and temporary leave.
Parklea has had two major "RIOTS" the latest in 1990. The latest "disturbance" arose from a series of incidents and inmate unrest during the period 11th of September 1990 to 10th of October 1990. The primary factor that caused the unrest was the introduction of a new "Private Property Policy". This policy involved the removal of large amounts of previously authorised personal property from inmates. The policy was a personal direction from the, then Minister of Corrective Services Mr Michael YABSLEY. The subsequent disturbances resulted in many million of dollars worth of damage to several Correctional Centres around the state and in the injury to several Inmates and Officers.
