ABOUT THE ACTUAL TUNIC: I am not sure what material the actual tunic from the movie is made out of, but I am pretty sure that it is made out of the same fabric as his cloak. They both look like a dark, olive green, possibly a light weight wool or a heavy weight cotton. Not sure, however, these are just guesses!! :-) The length of the tunic reaches to Faramir's knees, just around where the tops of his boots end. (If you make this costume, your own length will of course depend on your own measurements.) It is sleeveless, and the front is a large "V-neck". It is open entirely in the front and on both sides, and is only open half way up the back, the rest being sewn into a seam to the back of the neck.
Materials & Supplies: For my tunic, I found about 5 - 5 1/2 yards of heavy-weight *very* dark olive green fabric, for only $3 a yard in the clearance section. *Happy dance!* This worked wonderfully well, as I was able to make the sweeping Ranger cloak and the tunic out of the same material - I just had enough. I also bought a small package of suede-leather lace that was really thin (this was a small fortune, LOL!), some cord for the front, and I had some thread in the same color range as well as God knows how many gold eyelets that I had in my stash. Those little things always come in handy! PATTERN: I just happened to have a good pattern in my pattern stash that really worked for this costume!! I went with Butternick 5944, view C. This took a bit of editing, but this one was on the easier scale compared to some of the other patterns I've had to edit. :-/ NOTES ON Construction: When I went about making this, I laid out the pattern
pieces the way the pattern instructions illustrated, the editing is easier to do AFTER
you've cut out your material. The things I left out that are part of the pattern were the
collar and the sleeves. Attach at the shoulders and halfway up the back from the
neck to several inches below the waist, then finish all of the other openings, just fold
them over once and stitch, then again. To close the sides of the tunic, the actual
tunic in the movies has about 16 metal eyelets total on both sides of the tunic, meaning
there are 8 about an inch and a half apart on either side of the opening. Down the front of the tunic, to close the opening, I did it
exactly the way the photos on the DVD extras pictured. There are three pentagon-shaped
tabs holding a rope tie down the front on either side. (You will make six total,
there are only three on each side of the front. ) The last thing left to do on this particular piece was to hem the bottom edge. This was the easy part of my Ranger costume, now it's going to get tricky. :-)
