Summary:
In Midsomer Mallow, petty thief Peter Drinkwater is found dead during the 'Midsomer's Best Kept Village' competition: he was stabbed with a pitchfork. Before Troy and Barnaby can find the killer however, they discover some nasty secrets of the village's inhabitants, including the brutal murder of a nanny years previously. After a scene on the village green, one of the judges of the competition
dies - poisoned. Soon after, another judge is killed in her hotelroom, and it becomes quite obvious the killer is desperate to remain out of prison. Before they can be brought to justice, however, they are killed themselves...

The murderer of the nanny, Peter Drinkwater, Rosemary Furman and Samantha Johnstone is Bella Devere. As a child, Bella (whose real name was Annabel Weston) stabbed her nanny dead and was placed in a psychiatric institution. Samantha Johnstone had been in the same clinic, and Bella was afraid she'd be exposed as the murderer. At the village green festival, Bella tried to poison Samantha, but accidentally killed Rosemary Furman. Samantha Johnston later met her end when Bella stabbed her to death in her hotelroom. Peter Drinkwater was murdered because he was to marry Caroline, Bella's daughter. Bella disapproved ánd disposed of Peter. The murderer of Bella Devere is Marcus Devere, her husband. He knew about her past and current murderous activities, and wanted to spare her the torment of a trial and going to prison. That's why he smothered her with a pillow while she was asleep. |
