Summary:
After the owner of the Easterly Grange Hotel, Karl Wainwright, dies during the night, the hotel is left to four people. Soon after, one of them disappears, but his severed hand is found in the nearby woods. Before Barnaby can solve the case of the missing Gregory Chambers, more people start dying. Tristan Goodfellow was poisoned with a mushroom - nicknamed, appropriately, 'Destroying Angel'; Kenneth Gooders was crushed underneath an unscrewed drinkscabinet, and Susannah Chambers was shot in her chest. Someone is playing a nasty game with the new owners of the Easterly Grange Hotel - but who?

Solution

The murderers of Karl Wainwright and Gregory Chambers are Susannah Chambers, Tristan Goodfellow, Julia Gooders and Kenneth Gooders. They wanted to own the Hotel after Karl's death, but Karl informed them he had had Gregory Chambers over to make a new will and that Annie Tyson would be the sole beneficiary. Susannah smothered Karl with a pillow, and Tristan Goodfellow shot Gregory Chambers so he wouldn't reveal anything about the new will.

The murderer of Tristan Goodfellow, Susannah Chambers and Kenneth Gooders is Evelyn Pope, although in none of the three cases she committed the actual murder. Evelyn had found out about the plot to silence Karl and Gregory about the will, and decided the four murderers needed to be punished.

She sent her gardener over to Tristan Goodfellow's house to deliver some (poisonous) mushrooms (her gardener was unaware they were deadly). Evelyn also mimicked Julia Gooder's voice to a builder (being the local Punch & Judy woman), so that he would unscrew the drinkscabinet from the wall.

Lastly, she rang Julia Gooders with a frightening message, which scared Julia into keeping a shotgun with her in bed. Susannah also received a phonecall from Evelyn - but Evelyn faked Julia's voice and told Susannah she would confess to the police about their crimes. Susannah then went to Julia's house (intending to kill her with a knife), where Julia mistook her for an unknown stranger in the dark and shot her.

After this, Evelyn Pope committed suicide by taking a pills-overdose.
