Summary:
Robin Wooliscroft, a man living in Newton Magna, is found dead in a well after a party. Barnaby discovers that an Irishman who had recently moved to the village has disappeared, and that a villain named Melvyn Stockard has moved to Newton Magna also - and Wooliscroft was the father of his to-be son-in-law: but despite his objections to the marriage, would Stockard go over bodies to achieve his goal?

The murderer of Robin Wooliscroft and Mary Mohan is Frank Lightbourne. Robin was going to leave his wife to go to Australia with Valerie Megson and Mary Mohan, but his wife found out and paid Frank Lightbourne good money to kill her husband. Frank accepted the offer, killed Robin and threw him down the well. He subsequently killed Mary Mohan, because she was in on the plan to go to Australia, and she was suspecting Frank of being the murderer. Frank gained entrance to her house, because he had seen her take the hidden front-door key from under the flowerpot. |
