Summary:
Isobell Hewitt, an old, vivid and (seemingly) wealthy lady from the pittoresque village of Malham Bridge, is losing popularity fast. Not only is she leeching her son and his wife with her constant spending, but she also assaulted Margaret Seagrove, who is not taking it too well. Then, Isobell and dr. Goff are found dead along the river where the fly-fishers practise their hobby - both their heads have been battered in with a wooden post. Barnaby and Troy soon discover that there's more than one heated argument going on in Malham Bridge, but when Keith Scholey, the local restaurant-owner, is locked in his walk-in fridge and dies, it appears the murderer is desperate to cover their tracks.
The murderer is Quentin Roka, Isobell's friend and the local antique-shop owner. He loved Isobell and considered them to be very close friends - Isobell had even promised him her furniture when she died. Eventually he found out the house didn't even belong to Isobell, after which he realized how little he really meant to her. He followed her to the river that morning where she was fly-fishing, but when he saw her beating a fish to death, he also grabbed a post and bludgeoned her to death. Doctor Goff, who was fishing nearby, heard Isobell's screaming. After he came running, Quentin murdered him too to silence him. Quentin locked Keith Scholey in his fridge because he knew Scholey was one of the police's prime suspects. Quentin jammed the lock so the freezer couldn't be opened from the inside, pushed Scholey in and threw a phone in after him. This way, he wanted to make it look like Scholey had wanted to stage a murder-attempt on himself, but had accidentally died. |
