Summary:
In the village of Morton Fendle people are mad at Alan Hollingsworth, who used their money for a project but now appears to have lost all of it. One of the people who invested even threatens to kill him. Then Hollingsworth's wife, Simone, is abducted, and Brenda Buckley (who was in love with Alan) is killed after she followed Alan to Causton where he delivered the ransom. Before Barnaby is able to solve the case, Alan Hollingsworth is poisoned and it appears as if the murderer won't give up their freedom, and their money, easily.

Solution

The murderer of Brenda Buckley is Simone Hollingsworth. Simone had staged her own abduction, helped by her ex-boyfriend and her lesbian friend Sarah Lawton (also a resident of Morton Fendle). She went to pick up the ransom left for her in Causton, but was seen by Brendy Buckley. Subsequently, she drove her off the road in the woods between Morton Fendle and Causton.

Simone was eventually caught, when her 'kidnappers' dropped her off near Barnaby's house, but Troy had found the room where she was held 'hostage' in Sarah Lawton's house. Lawton, however, kept her mouth closed and so she went to prison, whereas Simone walked free. Later, she decided to testify against Simone anyway.

The murderer of Alan Hollingsworth is Sarah Lawton, who wanted to punish him for beating his wife, Simone, up. Barnaby later revealed the bruises Simone showed Sarah were fake (as Simone had worked for a large cosmetics company).
