Summary:
Tara Cavendish, wife of the rich cricket-captain and landowner Robert Cavendish, is bludgeoned to death near the quarry of Midsomer Worthy. The cricketbat used to murder her belongs to Robert Cavendish's son, but there are no fingerprints on it. Meanwhile, Troy has been selected for the Midsomer Worthy Cricket team, preparing for their match against Fletcher's Cross. Barnaby instructs Troy to keep his eyes open for discrepencies among the seemingly innocent inhabitants of Midsomer Worthy. Haste is needed though, because Charles Jennings is found stabbed dead during the cricketmatch. Soon a plot unfolds that has it roots many years ago, but someone is still out for revenge...
The murderer of Tara Cavendish is Mrs. Wilson, the housekeeper at Robert Cavendish's. Robert once exploited the Midsomer Worthy Quarry, where her husband (Matthew Draper) was killed during an explosion. Subsequently, she and her daughter plotted revenge. Mrs. Wilson pushed Robert's previous housekeeper, Emily Beavis, into the quarry so she could take her place (this murder was witnessed, but not fully understood, by While Tara was walking the dog, Mrs. Wilson followed her and bludgeoned to her death with a few well-aimed blows. Unfortunately for her, Charles Jennings witnessed the murder. The murderer of Charles Jennings is Trisha Smith. During the cricketmatch, when Charles was in the score-hut, Trish (Mrs. Wilson's daughter) caught him off guard and stabbed him in the back. She took his cap and pretended to be Charles when he was brought a cup of tea. Barnaby eventually discovered the link between Mrs. Wilson and Ms. Smith because they used the same - incorrect - phrase "to make a short story long". However, when he arrived at Cavendish Manor, Mrs. Wilson and Trish were attempting to kill Robert too. In the struggle that followed, Trish was stabbed dead accidentally. |
