Episode 45: Scene Three

Gemini put her breakfast tray on top of the others in the small tray window. She turned around so quickly that she ran into the person behind her in line. "I'm sorry, I didn't-" she cut herself off when she noticed who she ran into.

"That's okay," Sloane's deep voice came across smoothly. His eyes were filled with the million apologies he'd wanted to tell her since that fateful night months ago.

Gemini's attitude hardened. "Excuse me," she pushed past Sloane.

"Gemini, wait," Sloane began to pursue her.

"Stay away from me, Sloane."

"Please, let's just talk!"

Gemini spun around angrily. "Talk about what? How you lied to me? How you deceived me into thinking you were someone you aren't?"

"What are you talking about? Don't you think you owe me that at least?"

"I don't owe you anything!" Gemini snapped. "To think I actually thought you were someone I could trust; someone I thought was special."

Sloane was taken aback. His voice became gentle. "You did?"

"Yes, I did! But then I learned just what kind of scum you really are. You must be pretty popular down at the police station, eh?"

For a moment, Sloane was struck dumb. Slowly, the realization that Gemini had discovered his mistake-ridden past settled into the depths of his mind. In horror, his jaw dropped, but he quickly clamped his mouth shut. "Is that what this is about? My past?"

"Yes, that is what this is about," Gemini replied in a mocking tone. "Your little mistakes are costing you, Sloane. Bet you didn't ever think they would."

"That's what they were: mistakes! Don't even tell me you haven't made any!" Sloane's voice rose.

"Oh, I know I've made mistakes. And do you know what the biggest one is?"

"What?"

"Ever believing in you!" Gemini wheeled back around and stormed off in the opposite direction.

Briefly, just briefly, Sloane was ready to give up and let Gemini run off. He'd remembered what happened the last time he chased after her: he hadn't found her. But deep down in the darkest corners of his heart stirred feelings he knew he could not deny. Those feelings began to take control of him, until he remembered the harsh judgements she'd made against him. "I guess you aren't who I thought you were, Gemini. But that's okay, because I've learned my lesson. You can run of the edge of the Earth for all I care, because you and I are through."
