Episode 47: Scene Two
Gia quickly finished up her last question of Mrs. Devine's speech final. As soon as she finished, Gia triumphantly placed her pencil flat on the desk. She had known that it would be easy, but not that easy. Looking around, she took pleasure in the fact that many others were still bent over their paper, grinding their pencils fiercely on the paper, and working their erasers to correct their mistakes.
Catching Mrs. Devine's watchful, yet congratulatory, eye, Gia quietly slipped her history book out of her binder. She sighed heavily when she read the big, bold lettered title. Mr. Grant's book was becoming a pain to read, especially with the day-to-day quizzes he was giving out everyday. Gia enjoyed reading, but when the book refused to capture her attention, she would in turn refuse to read. She chuckled to herself silently. It didn't matter, anyways. Mr. Grant always let them use their book.
Opening her book, Gia pretended to pay close attention to the small words on the pages. Hiding behind the span of the book, she looked at Mel, sitting next to her. He, too, was still working hard on the test. He was rapping his pencil softly on the table, the trademark of his "incomprehension of subject matter," as she called it. Looking behind her, she saw Mickey "Mick" Nielsen, the class clown and an avid speaker. He was still chatting away with a neighbor, even after Mrs. Devine had yelled at them not too.
Gia was so busy taking in her surroundings that she didn't hear Mrs. Devine calling quietly to her. After a final "Gia!" she jerked her body back towards the front. When Mrs. Devine beckoned to her with her finger, Gia got up and walked up to her desk.
"Yes, Mrs. Devine?"
Mrs. Devine handed Gia a small slip of yellow paper. "You're needed in the office."
Gia's brow furrowed. She couldn't recall anything that would warrant a trip to the office. Looking back at Mrs. Devine, she asked, "Do you know what it's for?"
"No, but I think you'd better go find out, hon," Mrs. Devine gently shooed Gia out of the room.
Walking down the expansive, silent hallway, Gia's mind raced in an attempt to figure out what could possibly be the matter. Though she couldn't remember at present, she knew that whatever it was, it was big.
