Episode 47: Scene Six
"Hey, Marlo! How's it going?" Kendall greeted Marlo jovially. "Have you been getting around okay?"
"Well," Marlo sighed softly, "I had a little trouble getting to my third and fourth periods, but I think I have it down now. I can't thank you enough for what you did for me earlier this morning."
Jade came up behind Marlo. "Yes, I'm sure you can't. Kendall, sweetie, the bell's about to ring. Why don't we make tracks for our lockers before the hall gets crowded."
"But the bell won't ring for-"
"We need to go, Kendall!" Jade snapped, then smiled at Marlo. "That's Kendall for you: stubborn as a mule."
Marlo giggled. "Yeah."
Kendall grumbled as he got up from his seat by Marlo. "Okay, I'm going. But you keep me up-to-date on how things are going for you. If you need any help just give me a holler."
Jade grabbed Kendall's arm and began to practically drag Kendall away, but Marlo's voice interrupted her again.
"Oh wait, Kendall."
Jade rolled her eyes before letting Kendall run back over to Marlo.
"Is something wrong?"
"Yes, actually. Do you know where Mrs. Gillups' room is? I have her for Algebra I, and I can't seem to find her room," Marlo whined, taking extra care to emphasize her "innocence."
Kendall put a hand on top of Marlo's brown one. "Don't you worry, Marlo. I'll get you where you need to be."
"Kendall," Jade's voice was warning. Her eyes were locked onto Marlo, searching for any sign of phoniness.
"Get over it because I'm going to help this girl. She's new for Christ's sake, and it seems to me that you'd be able to sympathize with her a little better since you aren't such a veteran yourself," Kendall snapped at Jade.
Jade's mouth opened slightly as if to respond, but then she clamped it shut. Her eyes darkened and her jaw clenched. She wheeled around and stormed away, making sure that Kendall saw she wasn't pleased with the situation.
Kendall turned back to Jade and shrugged. "She's just jealous, that's all."
Marlo, unable to conceal her smile, looked down at the floor. That's right, Kendall, Marlo gloated internally. She has every right to be. You're becoming the downfall of your own relationship, and as soon as you two have a fallout, I'll be right here to catch you in my arms.
