Episode 48: Scene Four

Gia let her purse fall in the doorway of her room. Walking as if in a trance, she made her way back to her bedroom and to her closet. Opening the doors, she began mechanically taking out outfits and lying them on her bed. Gia went back and forth between the closet several times before she had all of the clothes she needed. Next, she pulled out a small black suitcase with the name "GIA MONTGOMERY" spelled across the front in gold letters. She placed the clothes in the suitcase and closed it, all the time staying silent.

Adrienne walked through the door of Gia's bedroom. "Did you realize you left the-" her voice trailed off when she saw Gia's suitcase. Eyes widening, she asked quietly, "What's that for?"

Gia stood straight up, looking at the wall behind her bed and not at Adrienne. "I'm leaving," she responded, her voice low and ominous yet still mechanical. It seemed as if the words that were leaving her mouth were rehearsed and somehow not Gia's.

"Leaving? Where? Why?"

"I'm going home today. Goodbye, Adrienne," Gia, still unblinking and unemotional, picked up her suitcase and began to leave the room.

"No, Gia!" Adrienne blocked the doorway. "Why are you going home?"

"It's summer. I need to visit my parents in Germany."

"Germany!" Adrienne shouted. "You can't go to Germany now, Gia! The summer's just beginning. Have you forgotten the class trip that we're all supposed to be taking this summer?"

"I have to go now."

"Gia, just stay a few more days so we can talk about this," Adrienne pleaded. Gia had never acted this way before, and it was beginning to scare Adrienne. She put a hand on Gia's shoulder. "Please?"

For a moment, it almost seemed as if Gia would snap out of her trance. Then, unexpectedly, "My plane leaves in an hour-and-a-half."

Gia walked out of the room, leaving a stunned Adrienne behind. Gia made one more trip, this time to the restroom. She pulled her "beauty pack" out of a drawer. Gia was about to leave when she looked up and saw the words spelled out in dark red lipstick:

Your time is running out...

Gia only stood looking at the words. "I have to go."
