Gia quickly brushed away a few stray tears as she picked up her large brown duffel bag and small purse. Clouds had invaded the spotless blue sky only minutes before, and it seemed to Gia that it was an ominous warning of what would happen if she remained in Midway any longer. Gia felt it would be best to leave Midway behind and hopefully get away from the pain that her past had caused her.

"We are now boarding the first group of passengers for the flight to Berlin," the soft voice of the female gate attendant came across the PA.

Gia couldn't help but look back down the small corridor that ran by her gate. She almost hoped to see something that would give her the strength to finally face the memories that had plagued her for so long, but all she found was a janitor sweeping away random bits of trash. She turned back to the gateway and sighed.

The woman at the ticket machine smiled at Gia. Tucking a loosened strand of her thick red hair behind her ear, the woman asked, "What're you headed to Germany for?"

Gia smiled up at the woman. Noticing the woman's name, she responded, "I'm going home to visit my parents, May. I thought it was about time for a vacation after being stuck in school for about ten months."

May laughed sweetly. "I can identify with that. I remember I lived only for the last day of school so that I could tell the teachers to kiss my-"

"I get the picture," Gia interrupted conveniently. "I can't say that I don't like school, it's just that we had to move to a new school. Things have been pretty rough over the past few months since the people at our new school hate us, you know."

May grimaced and nodded in sympathy. "I understand. I had to make a big change during my high school years. My junior high years..." May shook her head and looked towards the floor. "I don't even want to get into that. Let's just say they weren't too pleasant."

Gia leaned forward in curiosity. Eyes widened, she inquired, "Did you have things in your past you wish you never would have had happened?"

May looked at Gia as if she had asked why the sun shined. "Of course I do! Definetly more than others, let me tell you. From the looks of it, you've lead a pretty sheltered life. Let me tell you that not all of us are as fortunate to be able to stay away from the nasty cards life has to offer."

Gia slowly nodded before looking away. Blinking back unexpected tears, Gia silently scolded herself for getting so intimate with someone she hardly knew. "Please excuse me for prying. I suppose I just like to hear other people's stories."

"No apology necessary. But I must ask: have you been handed one of those bad cards in life? I mean, you just seemed so interested in my story."

Gia took a step back and looked around nervously. "No, of course not. I just...never mind. Are we about to board?"

May, keeping her eyes locked on Gia, nodded. "I believe we are."

Good, Gia thought to herself. Maybe now I can get away from it all. Maybe I can leave it behind for good.
