Episode Fifty-Four
July 19, 2001

Cliff began walking quickly towards the punch table, having recognized someone he hadn't seen in quite a while. "Mason! Hey, Mason!"

A boy of average-height with large glasses turned around from the table and looked for the source of the voice. When he spotted Cliff half-running towards him, he smiled, revealing two rows of perfectly set teeth. Braces at a very young age had made sure that his smile was as extra-special as his constantly-twinkling brown eyes.

"Hey, Fuzz! Where have you been, man?" Cliff asked as soon as he reached Mason.

"First of all, don't call me Fuzz. I hate that name. Second of all, I just got back from a week-long tour of Australia," Mason cast the last sentence out as if going to Australia were a routine thing to do.

"Australia?!" Cliff exclaimed. "How on earth did you get to go to Australia? Last time we talked you said that you'd be stuck in school all summer."

Mason ran a sly finger along the edge of the soft tablecloth covering the punch table. "I have ways, Cliff. I had a little chat with my parents, and they just up and decided that we should go to Australia for a family vacation."

Cliff raised a knowing eyebrow. "What did you threaten them with this time?"

Mason's smile brightened. "I told my dad that I'd expose his affair with his receptionist if he didn't take me. You know my dad; he'll fall for anything."

"You are bad, Mason," Cliff slapped his friend on the back. "I can't believe you'd threaten your own father. I wouldn't dare."

"Well, my father isn't heading a multi-million dollar corporation. That's the difference. By the way, I think there's something that you should know." Mason's voice became hushed and sober as he lead Cliff towards a hallway leading away from the main room of the Arboretum.

"What is it?"

"Cliff, before I say it, just know that it came unexpectedly and there was nothing that any of them could do about it."

"Who are you talking about?"

"The doctors."

"What doctors?"

"The doctors treating Kim, Cliff. She died last night of a heart attack."

Cliff felt himself slammed up against the wall, though it wasn't by anyone else. It was by the thought of Kim being dead...and him being the cause of it.
