Episode 55: Scene Five
Jade grabbed Kendall's arm and jerked it downwards. "You're just asking to get smacked, Kendall. Openly flirting with another girl isn't exactly my favorite thing to witness."
"Jade, we've been over this," Kendall's voice emitted warning. He cast a quick glance towards Tanner and Savannah to indicate that they didn't need to know about their personal problems.
"You think they don't know?" Jade asked incredulously. "Please, Kendall. The whole school knows about how you seem to be spending a lot of time with a girl that you just met. It's not your little secret anymore."
"You know what, I'm just about fed up with your endless whining. If you don't like my being friendly to others in this school, then that's your problem, not everyone else's."
"You're a real piece of work, you know that?" Jade advanced towards Kendall.
Tanner stepped between the two bickering partners. "Okay, you two, cool your jets. I understand you're having problems, but can't you wait until you're behind closed doors to deal with them?"
"I would," Jade glared at Kendall, "but someone seems to want to make a public showing of his goo-goo eyes towards Marlo. I swear, if it happens again I'm going to dump your butt on the curb."
"Jade, calm down," Savannah put comforting hands on her best friend's shoulders. "Kendall's just being a guy, that's all. Let's just listen to what the guy on stage is saying so that this whole carnival will go quicker and we can get back to the Academy, okay?"
"My pleasure," Jade let Savannah's hands fall from her shoulders as she continued to glare at Kendall.
"Oh, I meant to tell you that I'm joining a summer writing group," Savannah sat back down in her chair shyly.
"Oh really? What's it about?" Tanner inquired.
"It's called Word Power and it's run by this teacher named Mr. Hughes. I saw the announcement for it on the bulletin board, so I thought I'd just check it out so I'd have something to do. However, I'd rather have one of you go with me because I don't want to be there by myself."
"Why not?" Tanner asked, trying to keep the disgust out of his tone but failing.
Jade rammed her elbow into Tanner's ribs before smiling and saying, "Sure, Savannah. I hate writing, but I guess it won't hurt to check it out."
Kendall raised his hands in the air. "Nope, not for me. Everyone knows me and writing have been bitter enemies since our first encounter in kindergarten."
"Oh, come on. This is for Savannah, Ken," Jade urged.
"All the more reason for me to stay back. I'm sure she wouldn't want me there," Kendall grinned and winked at Savannah.
"Fine, stay behind. See how much I care!" Savannah's anger briefly rose to the surface before quickly fading away. "I just don't want to be alone."
Jade wrapped a reassuring arm around Savannah and hugged her close. "Don't you worry, sweetie. We're here for you." Her eyes fell upon Kendall and quickly soured. "Even Kendall, despite his refusal to admit it."
Savannah's lips parted into a small smile as she looked around at her friends. "You know, you guys are great. I can't wait to spend this summer with you three. I'm sure it'll be one we never forget."
