Episode 57: Scene Five

Savannah closed the front cover of the book carefully. It was her most prized possession: a book of poems that her grandmother had given her shortly before her death. Since the age of eight, Savannah had kept the poems close to her heart, for at times they were the only things that could see her through her tough times. She ran her fingers along the raised textured letters that spelled out the title. It was a wonderful feeling to be around something that she had held close to her from her past.

Savannah was so wrapped up in her blissful thoughts that she didn't notice two boys walking towards her. When she finally took notice of them, it was too late to grab her book and walk away as quickly as she could. The inevitable was happening. The decision that she had been agonizing over for weeks was finally upon her. For a moment, she bit her lip while pondering which choice to make.

"Lookie here! It's Lolita!" one said to his friend. He pointed and laughed at Savannah. "How ya been, brown sugar?"

Savannah quickly decided exactly what she was going to do. She managed to slightly raise her nose and glare at her two antagonists. "Don't call me that," she snapped harshly.

"I'll call you whatever I want, baby," one of them was so bold as to even put his arm around her shoulder.

Savannah put a hand around the boy's wrist and jerked it off of her. "I'd think twice before ever doing that again."

"And why's that?"

"Because next time you do that, you'll find yourself cut into tiny little pieces," Savannah's voice suddenly became calm yet icy. Her head was tilted downward so that only a sliver of her iris was showing. The eerie look of the whites of her eyes and her tense expression frightened the two boys.

"Wh-whadya mean you're going to cut me up?"

"I mean that if you don't stay away from me, I'll make sure that you never bother me or anyone else again, got that?"

"She's bluffing," the other guy attempted to relieve the tension with a quick, nervous laugh. "She won't do anything."

In a flash, Savannah had a small pocketknife in her hand. By now, only the whites of her eyes were showing. She was more menacing that she'd ever been before, and that was exactly how she meant to look. If she was ever going to find some peace with herself, she was going to have to scare the living daylights out of those boys.

The young men raised their hands, their eyes suddenly filled with nothing but pure fear. After stuttering mindlessly for a couple of sentences, the one that had put his arm around Savannah said hurriedly, "We don't want any trouble. If you want us to leave you alone, we will. Just please don't hurt us."

"I don't want to hurt you. But if you keep coming after me, I'll do what I have to in order to stop it. Can we just leave it at that?" Savannah dropped the hand with the knife in it to her side as she lapsed back into her soft, quiet state.

"I don't care, just don't pull that thing out on me again. Come on, Korry. Let's get out of here before she goes psycho again."

Savannah kept her eyes on them as they walked away. She was thoroughly ashamed of what she had done, and was just beginning to realize what could happen because of what she did. Her lips parted in horror while contemplating the thought of being found out. All Savannah had wanted to do was to scare them enough to keep them away, but now she was realizing that she'd made a terrible mistake...one that could cause more trouble than she could handle.
