Episode 58: Scene Two
Eve observed Brent in the middle of his basketball game with Trace, Allan, and some other of his friends. She felt the deep anger and resentment rising up from her chest, but she quickly repressed it. She would wait until the time was ripe to talk to Brent about his situation with Chloe.
After a final dunk, Brent slapped hands with Allan and Trace before walking away from the court. Eve stepped out from behind the tree enough so that Brent could see her. When he did, he said something to his friends before running towards her.
"How's it goin', babe?" Brent asked, then moved in for a kiss.
Eve leaned back just enough so that Brent's lips missed their target. "We need to talk."
"About what?"
"I think you know."
"Don't play this game with me, Eve," Brent said, his impatience rising.
"I'm not playing any games, Brent. I'd just like to know where we stand."
"What are you talking about? You know exactly where we stand."
"No I don't. I haven't known for a long time now. And with this new...development, if you will, in our relationship, I don't know what to think anymore," Eve replied, her hardened voice steady and unfaltering. "So I'd like to hear it straight from your mouth: where do we stand?"
"I don't have time for this. I have another game coming up in a few minutes," Brent turned to walk away.
Eve wrapped her hand around Brent's arm and dug her fingernails into his skin. Even when he yelped, she refused to give up her grip. "Game's over. I want answers now."
"You want answers about what? You're talking in circles, and I'm getting really sick and tired of it!"
"Tell me what the h*ll is going on with you and Chloe!"
"Me and Chloe?" Brent's eyebrows arched in confusion and digust. He yanked his arm out of Eve's grip and stared at her. "Nothing's going on between me and Chloe. Why would you even think that?"
"Because I heard your conversation with her earlier!" The words slipped out before Eve could stop them. She stumbled backwards before regaining her composure. "I know that she had a thing for you."
"Yeah, the key word is 'had,' Eve. That means it was in the past."
"Did you like her?"
Brent was stunned by her frankness. "I think you have some issues you need to resolve, Eve. Serious issues."
"The only issue I want resolved is whether you liked Chloe or not! Tell me now, Brent, or I'll have no choice but to think that you did. And if you did, there is no way that I can trust you ever again. Just tell the truth, Brent. All I want is the truth."
