Episode 58: Scene Five
"Do we have to go?" Robin asked, her starry eyes fixed upon the sun making its final drop below the horizon. "It's so beautiful out here. Why spoil the evening by going back to a noisy, crowded dormitory?"
"Because that noisy, crowded dormitory is where I plan to get some sleep tonight," Sloane laughed, throwing his arm around Robin's shoulder. He then looked towards the ground shyly. "You've really made this day unforgettable, Robbie."
Robin lifted Sloane's chin up with her fingers. "I'm glad I could do something to make you as happy as I am."
For a moment, the two just stood looking into each other's eyes. They were caught up in the magic of the twilight. It was just the two of them, the soft lake breeze, and the rippling waves of the lake.
"I guess we'd better get back. Reruns of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air are coming on tonight."
Robin smacked Sloane on his arm. "Hey! I thought you said you were going to get some sleep!"
Sloane shrugged. "I had a change of heart. Can you blame a guy?"
Robin giggled before raising her arm for a look at her watch. She gasped and turned back to Sloane. "Oh my goodness, it is late. I have to go talk with the new photography teacher about our photo shoot."
"New photo instructor?" Sloane rolled his eyes.
"Yeah. We didn't have much choice seeing how our old one decided to quit teaching and move to California. Still, she asked me to help the new instructor get into the swing of things. I'll catch you later, okay?"
Sloane apprehensively hugged Robin. He wasn't used to such displays of affection, but he was still determined to show it. "Okay. I'll talk to you later."
Sloane watched Robin sprint off towards the photography building. "That girl never stops," he said to himself.
Sloane heard sand shuffling behind him, causing him to jump. Without turning around, he just closed his eyes and asked in a hushed tone, "Who's there?"
"It's just me," came back a hurried, flustered response.
"What are you doing here?" Sloane's inquiry came out sharp and in a disgusting tone, causing Gemini to tense defensively.
"This is an open carnival, you know. I have the right to go wherever I want to," she shot back. She then looked down towards the ground. "Besides, I'm looking for Barrett."
"So you mean you're looking for trouble? Come on, Gemini. Just leave well enough alone."
"I don't need you to-"
"Okay, okay," Sloane interrupted before Gemini had the chance to start her tirade. "Just don't go and do something you'll regret."
"I won't. I'm just going to go and knock some sense into his empty head, that's all. Can you believe that he and his crazy dad want to cremate Kim to get the whole mess over with?"
"Man, that sucks."
"Yeah, it does. I'm going to go give Mister Anderson a piece of my mind," Gemini declared, her eyes snapping and her hair blowing wildly about her producing an eerie aura about her. Before she could think about what she was saying, she asked, "Would you like to come along?"
Sloane's head tilted slightly when he heard the question. "Do you want me to?"
Gemini shrugged and turned away from him. "I'm sorry. It just slipped out."
Silence then hung between them. Sloane had shoved his hands in his pockets and Gemini's arms were folded nervously across her chest. The two just stood there listening to the crickets chirping and the waves slipping on and off of the shore.
"Well, I guess I'd better head back to the dorm," Gemini cut the silence. She began walking away from Sloane.
"Just stay strong for Kim," Sloane called to her.
Gemini paused and looked back at Sloane, a small smile present on her face. "I will."
